Kernel Panics on ASUS A15 with external Display

Hello,

I am experiencing a driver issue (or I suspect that I am) on my Asus A15 laptop with an external monitor. The occurrence of this problem is very strange for me, as it started at the very beginning of my Arch Linux experience. However, it has not continued with the same frequency. The problem did not occur for several months, but has now started again.

System Specifications:
Asus TUF A15 Laptop (TUF FA506II-BQ200)
AMD Ryzen 4800H with integrated GPU
NVIDIA GTX1650 Ti Mobile

Kernel Version: 6.16.10-arch1-1
KDE Plasma Version: 6.4.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.18.0
Qt Version: 6.9.2
Graphics Platform: Wayland

Problem Definition:
The problem occurs in two ways:
- The system goes into a blue screen with a kernel panic message. The message is one of: "Fatal exception in interrupt" or "Attempted to kill the idle task!"
-- Fatal exception in interrupt 1
-- Fatal exception in interrupt 2
-- Fatal exception in interrupt 3
-- Attempted to kill the idle task

- The system suddenly freezes and goes to a black or green screen, and becomes unresponsive to anything, including SysRq.

When the system freezes, it does not leave any log messages behind.

Reproducing Error and Patterns:
- The error mostly occurs when media, especially video, is playing in the browser. The likelihood of triggering the issue increases with the number of media-playing tabs.
- It also triggers when I pause the video and leave the computer for about 15–20 minutes.
- Most importantly, the error only triggers when an external monitor is used.

Solving Attempts:
- I tried using different NVIDIA drivers: nvidia, nvidia-open, and their dkms versions
- I tried switching to the LTS kernel
- I was using the Firefox-based Zen Browser. There is an article from Firefox that mentions hardware acceleration may cause graphics driver issues (here), so I disabled it.
- I suspected a faulty update of Zen Browser might be the cause, so I switched to Firefox. I also disabled hardware acceleration.
- Also checked this post which features a similar laptop, but the problem is not quite the same.

Try whether "processor.max_cstate=1" stabilizes it - do you have control over PBO or the curve optimizer in the UEFI?

Re: Kernel Panics on ASUS A15 with external Display

Thank you for your response.

I don’t have access to PBO or the Curve Optimizer since I’m using a laptop, which comes with limited BIOS options.
I tried setting processor.max_cstate=1, and while it seemed promising at first, the system eventually went into a kernel panic again after several hours of testing:
Attempted to kill the idle task

I also noticed that the laptop fans are running more frequently than usual, though I assume that’s an expected side effect?

Restricting the c-state prevents the CPU from entering lower power states, so it will heat up more, yes.

Another constant is the swapper task, do you use zswap or a zram device? Do you overclock the RAM (XMP/EXPO count as that)?
Can you reduce the RAM clocks/timings?

Is the swap device an nvme?

I did not change anything on ram. It should works with default clocks. Do you still suggest reducing ram clock?

Disable the zram swap, make absolutely sure zswap is and has been disabled (zswapping zram will cause trouble for almost sure), feel free to add a swap file and for good measure "processor.max_cstate=1 iommu=soft"
Also, are there other kernel messages/errors/warnings next to the reports you're posting (also firmware crashes etc et pp.)?

Re: Kernel Panics on ASUS A15 with external Display

exiort@archlinux ~$ swapon --show
exiort@archlinux ~$ zramctl
exiort@archlinux ~$ sudo cat /sys/module/zswap/parameters/enabled
N

I disabled zram/zswap completely and added "iommu=soft". Started to checking system stability.

Also, are there other kernel messages/errors/warnings next to the reports you're posting (also firmware crashes etc et pp.)?

I am sharing kernel logs with some general query. If you need a specific type of message, please let me know

Ideally post the entire journal of the crashing boot, eg

sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

for the previous (-1) one.

Re: Kernel Panics on ASUS A15 with external Display

The crashes are all over the place, there's even a  nullptr deref in there.
1. nvidia has fixed some CVEs in the driver version you're already using, but maybe test the non-open driver or even nouveau and see wether the crashes still happen
2. remove supergfxd and ideally rtkit (you probably have the latter because of xdg-portal what's a hard dependency of plasma what might become an obstacle)
