laggy video and no audio with pipewire

Description:
started randomly when I booted into arch
Playing videos in the browser or locally would lag to almost a halt.

However, when I use the command video temporarily runs well until I reload or skip around the bar.
systemctl --user restart pipewire-pulse

there is 0 audio from headphones connected by cable, but I have audio when booting from my second drive with windows on it.

Ive had this issue before and both things fixed themselves at the same time. I'm not even sure how but they might be related.

I made sure to update arch, and browsed many posts but nothing I tried helped.

Here are a bunch of commands that other somewhat related posts asked about

Thanks!

pacman -Q | grep -E 'pipe|pulse'

Re: laggy video and no audio with pipewire

That reads like https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=307540 so try the solution of https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p2263862 and adding the two modules into the MODULES section of your mkinitcpio.conf: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Mkinitcpio#MODULES (it might be sufficient to add the two modules to an /etc/modules-load.d/ conf file, but adding them to mkinitcpio will make things more guaranteed.

Also since a seoondary Windows is mentioned, make sure fast boot is disabled https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dual_b … ibernation -- if you think it is, double check, windows tends to reenable this on updates (and no, that you are on a physically different drive is irrelevant to the implications you need to prevent by disabling fast boot)

Re: laggy video and no audio with pipewire

Ive made sure fast boot is disabled (and secure boot just in case)

Since youve mentioned this post, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=307540
I realized I forgot to mention the issue happens with both the regular kernel and LTS kernel, versions:

6.17.1-arch1-1

6.12.51-1-lts

I've also edited /etc/mkinitcpio.conf modules line to (below) and restarted.
MODULES=(snd_acp_legacy_common snd_acp_legacy_mach)

the issue unfortunately persists

Edit:
I've also discovered that if I uninstall pipewire-alsa
and run
mpv --ao=alsa 'some_video.mp4'

I get the following output but the video runs smoothly (still no audio)

● Video --vid=1 (h264 1920x1080 60 fps) [default]
● Audio --aid=1 (aac 2ch 48000 Hz 192 kbps) [default]
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1000:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
[ao/alsa] Playback open error: No such file or directory
[ao] Failed to initialize audio driver 'alsa'
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
Audio: no audio
VO: [gpu] 1920x1080 yuv420p
V: 00:00:19 / 00:00:21 (91%)
Exiting... (Quit)

but once I install pipewire-alsa again the video lags
output:

client removed during hook handling
● Video --vid=1 (h264 1920x1080 60 fps) [default]
● Audio --aid=1 (aac 2ch 48000 Hz 192 kbps) [default]

Re: laggy video and no audio with pipewire

Update:
After scouring some more forums I saw a suggestion to delete the files at
$HOME/.local/state/wireplumber/

After deleting the files and restarting the video was back to normal and I just had to toggle the automute option in alsamixer again to get the audio as well.

I do have a backup of the troublesome files.

Is there a need for further investigation or should I mark as solved?

Re: laggy video and no audio with pipewire

These proc access failures are weird and should not be the case. Can you throw in

lspci -k
sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

they seem to be gone after I removed the wireplumber files if those are what you meant.
let me know if you'd like to see what was in them.
