First time trying arch, ive had it for a few days now, was trying to install exFAT support and it failed beacsue mirrors wasnt found, then i tried a full upgrade, i could then install exFAT, after a reboot my system is now dead, i get to grub but when selecting arch i get a black screen, i lose connection to my monitors. I'm not sure how to proceed, id love to not have to do a clean reinstall again.
Im on 9800xrd / AMD 9070xt might be useful.

just cpu and gpu only might not be enough
can you boot an install media?
Online
Can you boot if you add 'nomodeset' to the kernel command line? Make sure to remove 'quiet' at the same time to you can actually see what's going on. What all was updated?
Beyond that, what were you trying to install? exFAT support has been part of the kernel package for a long time now. How was the mirror not found, are you sure it wasn't that the package wasn't found on the mirror? Why did you use 'yy' instead of just one 'y' when updating?

Ill post the logs from pacman, i mounted the drive in windows so if there is anything else i should pull let me know, i can boot the drive to grub, notthen i dont et any forther, Can try going into a terminal in grub and run any commands you think will help. Ill just post the raw log for the upgrade here. Cant see a way to attach it as a file. Hope that is ok. The 404 errors i got is not here for some reason, laso the removals of the package at the end was due to conflicting packages

Can you boot if you add 'nomodeset' to the kernel command line? Make sure to remove 'quiet' at the same time
also try the multi-user.target (2nd link below)
If those work, what is your graphical.target (SDDM?)
Can you ctrl+alt+f3 when that fails?
Can you perhaps ssh into the system?
Don't reboot w/ the power button, but try to frenetically press ctrl+alt+del or use the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) (+REISUB), nb. you'll have to explicitly enable the latter w/ a kernel parameter.
Then please post your complete system journal for the previous (the bad) boot:
sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.stOffline
have you tried to install arch on exFAT?

No i was simply trying to mount my usb thumbdrive

* Non boot related stuff:
* what is your graphical.target (SDDM?)
Non login related stuff:
* add 'nomodeset' to the kernel command line
* try the multi-user.target (2nd link below)
* ctrl+alt+f3
* Don't reboot w/ the power button, but try to frenetically press ctrl+alt+del or use the SysRq+REISUB, nb. you'll have to explicitly enable the latter w/ a kernel parameter.
Not related to a local login stuff:
* Can you perhaps ssh into the system?
Assuming you get to login via the above somehow:
* sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Ok so i think im just gnna reinstall instead, to much hassle with all this, i only had it for a few day so not gonna lose much except some basic configuration, but the fact that a simple package upgrade can brick my entire system don't exactly fill me with confidence, do i need to be anxious every time i do an upgrade? Is this a common occurrance? Did i do something wrong, am i not supposed to do an upgrade like that? i know the paramters was wrong and i specified the -y arg twice, but that seems unreasonable to be the cause.
I would've preferred to know why it actually bricked but this is looking to take alot of back and forth.
So any advice on backups? Timeshift, rsync, something else so i can fix this a bit easier next time?
Thanks to everyone who tried to help

If you're going to reinstall, maybe try a different distro. What we were asking for is the most basic of troubleshooting steps, if that's too much, Arch probably isn't a good fit.

i dont agree with that,i new to arch and ill learn it eventually, i like the idea of a minimal distro where i need to do everything from scratch, but i have no clue how to do any of this at this point.

These might be basic stuff for people who have some experience with arch
what is your graphical.target (SDDM?) Where would i find that?
Kernel commandline? How do i access that?
Ctrl alt f3? where do i need to press this, in grubmenu?
ctrl+alt+del or use the SysRq+REISUB, nb. ? i cant even login, my monitors literally loses signal when i try and boot.
i dont expect to be handheld and sure with what i got here i could spend however long it would take searching for more information myself, to maybe get it working, or i can spend 40 minutes reinstalling and knowing i got a fully functional system again and backup things before i do an upgrade next time, who knows what else has been broken by this upgrade.

ok - put in most plain english:
you get to grub
you can select arch
after that you get blank screen
how to get started from here:
in grub while arch is select - press "E" on your keyboard to entervedit mode
use cursor down to get down to the kernel line
press "END" to get at the end of the line
keep pressing "BACKSPACE" until the option QUITE is gone
type "NOMODESET" to add that as an option
press "F10" to boot that edited live
if that's too much to ask for - then yes, you have to fear that a later update will break your system again
but if asking you to simply modify your boot even when given you instructions how to do so (see Seths signature) then maybe not just arch but linux in general likely isn't for you and you may rather use windows or mac instead
how did you even install arch when not even able to handle grub? did you use archinstall? if so - next time go the manual way: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Installation_guide
arch usn't hard - nor is linux - but you have to have a bit more effort into it than just throwing when some update breaks

Ok so it turns out, had nothing to do with the upgrade, for some strange reason, the reboot after the upgrade, my POST started taking significantly longer, and when booting arch like i said, my screens lost signal, but if i waited for like 30 seconds after boot menu it eventually got to the loginscreen. It never behaved like that before that. Very strange.
Thanks again for the replies, and if someone has some idea whats going on with that pls share it.

This makes no sense whatsoever. The firmware posts *before* any bootloader.
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:
sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.stOffline
Everybody forgets that dependent on the state of the mirrors you connect to, "Syyu" has the chance to put your system into a partial upgrade state. Never do "Syyu".
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p1956105
Edit: And if you system is in that state its behaviour is undefined so it could have any symptoms, again, dependent on which packages were involved.

Ok my log is uploaded at https://0x0.st/K2KW.txt
I did end up doing a clean install when i though my system was broken. When the fresh install behaved the exact same way i let it continue while i went looking for answers and then eventually i got to login and realized i didn't have to reinstall at all
I learned alot from installing twice so wasn't a big deal. Still interested in if that bootlog reveals anything, would love to not have to wait this long for my system to boot.

One thing i saw now right before the login pops up that there has been an fschk that says my root partition is clean and how many files blocks etc, i cant remeber seeing that before this problem began. Might explain why it's taking so long. Its a 1TB partition.
From grub menu unitl loginpromt it takes around 1m10s.
Seems strange that a fschk wouldn't show up in the logs though.
This line in the logs tells us how long the startup took.
Oct 23 18:54:42 schh systemd[1]: Startup finished in 34.227s (firmware) + 4.262s (loader) + 1min 7.442s (kernel) + 2.781s (userspace) = 1min 48.714s.I don't have logs from before it started to compare though, but seems to say how long the full boot took. But that line is logged 6 seconds before i login.
Bootlogs timestamps start at 18:54:40 and i login at 18:54:48 so something happens during that time that's not reflected by the logs as seth pointed out.
I've identified what usb device its having issues with and found info about it here
https://linux-hardware.org/?id=usb:174c-2174
From lsusb:
Bus 007 Device 002: ID 174c:2174 ASMedia Technology Inc. ASMT2307
Bus 008 Device 002: ID 174c:3174 ASMedia Technology Inc. ASMT2307This is my USB Hub / 2-Port Switch i have mouse, keyboard, microphone and my FiiO Desktop DAC/AMP connected to.
I'm assuming the USB device number 3, 4, 5, 6 in the errors corresponds to the 4 devices connected.
All the devices work fine so not sure exactly why deveice descriptors cant be read during boot. Its powered only through usb
Logs are only complaining about 7-2
I'm assuming the 8-2 is my laptop connected to the second output usb port, not sure what else it could be.
I tried disconnecting my usb hub but no difference

That's before anything in the journal - if it's not the hub, what is your boot partition and boot loader?

The timeouts in this log do seem to take quite a bit of time actually, its about a minute so seems to be about right, but its was just as slow with the hub disconnected.
Also i had teh same hub and devices connected on the same port before this started.
