Re: Accessing the windows partition

3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

And run chkdsk to sanitize the FS.

Re: Accessing the windows partition

http://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dual_bo … ibernation links an explanation of the problem w/ the condition as well as further links on how to configure this on different windows versions and a command for the windows command line shell.
I don't know how to explain this easier, please ask specific questions about specific obstacles (though, quite frankly, windows configuration is off topic and you'd have to ask that on some windows help board)

nb. that this will only mitigate further incidents - you still have to sanitize the filesystem w/ chkdsk on windows.

Re: Accessing the windows partition

adomancer: to pretend it’s fast to boot, Windows doesn’t shut down when you ask it to shut down. Instead it logs the user out and enters hibernation, which Microsoft branded as Fast Startup. The trick works great, because looking at the screen only you can’t tell the difference between a system going out of hibernation and one that actually boots fast. Most users never experiences any trouble either, since they never change anything in the computer from the moment it’s bought to when it ends in the trash bin.

As a consequence, Windows is technically still “running” and the filesystems remain opened on its end. If you move the disk to another computer or boot another system, these filesystems are still not cleanly unmounted. And can’t be mounted again until propery closed. At least not safely.

Note that while seth’s evaluation is likely to be true, there may be other reasons why that filesystem can’t be mounted. This one is just the most likely, so start with it. That is: make sure you shut down (actually shut down) the Windows instance that uses the filesystem.
