[SOLVED] Unity games crash on boot on Steam on Wayland

First of all, this isn't new to me and I've had an identical issue previously, please see [SOLVED] Unity games won't boot on Proton/Steam on Wayland

Not sure what caused stuff to break again, although a few new random issues have occurred that I'm also tempted to post about.

Now a weird thing here, back when this issue first occured, both games made logs at their location around

/home/Ashley/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/<Game ID>/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Temp/<Game Author>/<Game Name>/Crashes/

but this time neither game is producing any logs

As far as attempted fixes, I have:

  • Updated everything with pacman -Syu multiple times over multiple days, in hopes the issue would fix itself

  • All the cliche checking integrity of files and full uninstall/reinstalls of the games

  • Tried the old fixes from the previously mentioned post, such as reinstalling libraries

  • Attempted using "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" in the launch options. This was a bandaid fix the first time this issue occurred, but now does nothing

My best guess is just some GPU driver or library issue that I don't have the know-how of how to diagnose and fix. I'm not sure why it suddenly broke though.

If it helps provide more context as to what has gone wrong, the other issues I'm experiencing on my machine right now are:

  • Spectacle is meant to immediatley copy the screenshot to the clipboard, but now copies a blank image to the clipboard after taking a screenshot. It will properly copy if I press Copy in Spectacle's window.

  • When attempting to put my machine to sleep, the screen will shut off for a few seconds as expected, but then suddenly come back on, in a frozen uninteractable state, and never successfully sleep. Powering the system off with the physical power button overrides this issue and does power off the machine gracefully.

Out of the blue, a pacman -syu asked if I wanted to install lib32-vulkan-radeon or vulkan-radeon, so I picked lib32-vulkan-radeon like what fixed the original issue, and that fixed it. I'm not sure why it did that in the first place. Apologies.

You originally hammered enter when installing steam which will have asked you for a lib32-vulkan-provider which will have (lexographically) defaulted to lib32-amdvlk (lib32-vulkan-radeon will have been a choice you should have picked at that point), which has a history of being worse than radv. That one got dropped from the repos because AMD stopped maintaining it in favor of radv, which leaves that with the relevant migration choice on upgrade

Which reads like the identical issue you had in the previous thread... did you reinstall at some point?
