New NVidia Open drivers - 580.105.08-1

Is it just me, or have these latest drivers brought a huge performance increase?

Benchmarking (Unigine-heaven, Cyberpunk 2077 and SoTR - well, perhaps not SoTR, that's about the same) I reckon I've had a 50% uplift in framerate (possibly higher).

No noticeable difference in CUDA apps (e.g. Blender rendering), but still, has something magical happened with the drivers?

Config and card and in my sig.

Re: New NVidia Open drivers - 580.105.08-1

maybe it's you.

I rolled back to 580.95 after the upgrade reset my main HDMI monitor to 1920x1080 from 2560x1440.

seems like there are some problems with 580.105 - https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kern … issues/960

I'll wait for another upgrade that works.

Re: New NVidia Open drivers - 580.105.08-1

Doing a quick search:

Phoronix: There are not news about recent performance increase in nvidia cards.

DXVK github repo: Latest release months ago, so not new things over there.

Quick LLM web search about cyberpunk 2077: latest update in september, but not sure since it's LLM, check the latest update, could be there an optimization.

Nvidia open-gpu-kernel: latest release 4th of November.

But your card is a very particular one, because it's maybe the last one that nvidia Geforce made with full love tongue. It's the last Geforce that have nvlink :C . Your card doesn't have the DLSS support as I know, but it could be that your card is now using the tensor cores better for doing some task. Are you playing with ray tracing ? If so, maybe your high end tier card could be using the tensor core better now for doing some operations in ray traicing.  Maybe you get lucky and some nvidia dev wanted to add better support for his 3090 in home tongue, but I think that's very unlikely.

Re: New NVidia Open drivers - 580.105.08-1

I've experimented with RT, and in Cyberpunk it's definitely improved, but turned off and there's a big improvement, and TBH, I can't see any difference (60 YO eyes and all that), so I tend to leave RT off.

I can even enable path tracing, and get a playable frame rate, but I leave that off for the same reason (looks just the same, to me).

I sometimes wonder if ray tracing/path tracing are the rest of the world having a joke at my expense, and there's no difference, really.

They're not, there really isn't any difference between RT ON and OFF in most games, so I never enable it; IDK about path tracing, though, never heard of that one. I think RT was just a marketing trick to make us buy RTX cards when in reality such a thing doesn't exist. I also don't use DLSS or whatever its name was, it's a joke for potato computers that only worsens the overall game's look.

As for what the OP asked: specifically about Cyberpunk 2077 I doubt there were any optimizations. I get top performance at epic settings (with only 3 settings OFF bc I don't like what the game looks like with them: RT, DLSS and motion blur) with RTX 3070 Ti 8GB and a much older driver (555.58 against kernel 6.11.9, these two work perfectly stable, as if they were written for each other). Plus a little trick with a bash script for DLL overrides in Wine, which is the reason all games run a lot better in my Wine than in Steam with Protons. If I can get top performance with this old driver and a lot weaker video card than the OP's, then nvidia most probably didn't optimize anything. However, it's possible that the updated driver removed a background process or two (or more) that have been previously hindering the whole game's performance. Such a thing wouldn't be for the first time with nvidia drivers...

Re: New NVidia Open drivers - 580.105.08-1

Hi All,
It seems even fresh nvidia-dkms-580.105.08-2 has not resolved issue with 2560x1440 (in my case HDMI) resolution.

per feedback https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kern … issues/960 looks there is no solution at the moment (have not yet checked, just decided to wait too until next -3 (or even -4) release.
So current solution - I am also using  older nvidia-dkms  Version         : 580.95.05-1.

Re: New NVidia Open drivers - 580.105.08-1

The number behind the final dash is the build version, it's incredibly unlikely that changes in it will fix this, nvidia will have to release an actual new driver version (sth. like 580.105.09 or 580.117.03 or so)
