kernel 6.16.10-arch1-1 -> newer version affects non-standard aspect

I have a X13 and T430s Thinkpads with 1920x1080 and 1600x900 (16:9) native resolutions.

I use an XFCE desktop but the change is somehow related to linux package:

For some very old applications from time to time I need to switch my screen resolution to 1024x768 (4:3). Till the kernel 6.16.10-arch1-1 it resulted in 4:3 area centered in the middle with proper pixel proportions and some black margins at both sides. With the newer 'linux' package the 1024x768 is stretched for the whole screen with stretched pixels. I'd say something with X or XFCE but the 'linux' package is the only one that affects the change in behaviour. Maybe some kernel option would help to keep the old behaviour..?
