[SOLVED] nvidia problems after update

Hello,

Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.5.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.19.0
Qt Version: 6.10.0
Kernel Version: 6.12.57-1-lts (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 8 × AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 8-Core Processor
Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (30.5 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor 1: llvmpipe
Graphics Processor 2: llvmpipe
Manufacturer: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
Product Name: MS-7D77
System Version: 1.0
Display Adapter: nVidia RTX 5070

After yesterday's update my display resolution dropped from 2560x1440 to 1920x1080 and refresh rate from 75Hz to 60Hz. I was able to restore resolution back (with the kind help of ChatGPT), but not refresh rate. Also, steam games (specifically Fallout 76) wouldn't run, and other wine game is laggy.

Help will be appreciated. TIA

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia problems after update

I have the following packages installed:
nvidia (kernel modules), nvidia-settings, nvidia-utils - all version 580.105.08-1

Tried downgrade to install version 580.95.05, downgrade says:

loading packages...
warning: downgrading package nvidia (580.105.08-1 => 580.95.05-9)
resolving dependencies...
warning: cannot resolve "nvidia-utils=580.95.05", a dependency of "nvidia"
:: The following package cannot be upgraded due to unresolvable dependencies:
      nvidia

:: Do you want to skip the above package for this upgrade? [y/N]

No matter what the answer, nothing is installed.

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia problems after update

The 'nvidia' package has never worked, and will never work, with your card. Even on a supported card, it wouldn't work with the kernel you're using.

Everything worked fine untill yesterday's update. I now did a clean install of arch and having troubles with extremely low FPS. Everything installed by arch installer.

What is recommended? Downgrade to previuos version? Or install nvidia-open or nvidia-open-dkms?

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia problems after update

Kernel Version: 6.12.57-1-lts (64-bit)

nvidia-open-lts (for now) or nvidia-open-dkms, you'll also have to downgrade nvidia-utils and probably nvidia-settings.

not using archinstall unless you know your way around
although uncommon instslling a specific package version along its dependencies is part of common package management
if you rely on tools like archinstall (which are, btw, not meant as an easy way around the manual by users new to arch) you should familiarize yourself with arch systdm maintenance ...

... and if you want to stay on linux invest in a amd gpu on your next upgrade unless you have a specific need for cuda

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia problems after update

I downgraded nvidia-open-dkms to older version, all problems solved.

Thanks

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia problems after update

Same Problem here... Update on Monday and my second screen with 2560x1080p only works with 1920x1080.
Reinstalled Arch and still same Problem... then i took the lts version of nvidia open (580.95) and it was working.
Today tried to update again and it broke again...

Any hints?

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia problems after update

Don't use the 580.105.08 drivers, nvidia is working on a fix.

I don't think you can update the kernel without nvidia , could you ? it just won't work properly.

Sure you can. After downgrading add the nvidia packages to the ignore list in /etc/pacman.conf:

IgnorePkg = nvidia-open-dkms nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-utils nvidia-settings

Then you can update everything except the nvidia stuff.

which is a partial update which is not supported - someone registered back in 2008 should know this

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia problems after update

But in this case determined to be necessary because nvidia fudged the 580.105 release - the downgrade/temporary partial update is deliberate to solve an immediate problem and here even less problematic because of dkms and the other packages being binary blobs (ie. not compiled/updated w/ the rest of the repo) anyway.

Well, supported or not, it works for me. In any case this is just a temporary solution until a fix is released.
