Gonna need more info than that...
When does it happen, kernel and mesa versions etc.
There are many possible causes, but you can try to append the amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 or amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x12 kernel parameter as a workaround.

FWIW I had the exact same issue after an update yesterday, on Radeon 9060XT 16Gb - with SDDM, direct invocation of kwin_wayland and with Sway. I'll try to grab some logs if it still happens once I'm back home.

Maybe mesa I'll try to roll back and write the result

Yeah, FWIW the debug mask thing didn’t do anything. I think it might be a different kernel issue resulting in a similar error, eg. the traceback looks, to me, entirely different. Also to make sure we’re actually dealing with the same thing (I suspect so because of similar timing but I can’t know - and I tried both current kernel and LTS) - could you look for some trace backs in your logs?

Does either of you have a https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Variable_refresh_rate capable monitor?
Both on X11?

Does either of you have a https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Variable_refresh_rate capable monitor?
Both on X11?
Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
I do have VRR. I even tried disabling it in kwin’s config. As I wrote this is with kwin_wayland and sway. I don’t have X11 around.

Please use

tags, not "quote" tags. Edit your post in this regard.
Do you have another monitor (ideally sth. like 1080p60, nothing fancy)?
Online
I’ll edit properly once home - I’m currently on mobile. Once there I might be able to set something like that up sure, but it will take a few hours at least.
Offline
I only have one monitor Display Port 1680x1050, freezes for an hour of gaming

FWIW I had the exact same issue after an update yesterday
Did that happen to include https://archlinux.org/packages/core/any … re-amdgpu/ ?
Online
Yes, but annoyingly enough it doesn't seem like downgrading that package fixes the issue
- even though I'm fairly sure that's the only potential culprit
Edit: oh. Downgrading the radeon, intel and other firmware packages didn't work - but downgrading the kernel (to 6.17.7-arch1-2) did. It's possible that I missed a step - it's late and I'm exhausted to be honest - but also I'm TBH way too tired to look into it further right now.

So would be a bug in 6.17.8 that got backported into the LTS kernel?
@Maser, try to downgrade the kernel to 6.12.56-1 and then both of you should keep an eye on whether this prevents further crashes and whether there're still amdgpu related crashes in the journal and you can also try whether it was fixed in the "just" released 6.12.58 LTS kernel
Online
Good evening.
I had the same problem: amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* [CRTC:86:crtc-0] flip_done timed out. The screen went black and the keyboard became unresponsive, so I forced shutdown using the button. When I restarted, the IGPU wouldn't activate anymore, black screen! I unplugged the IGPU and it restarted.
Downgrading the kernel and the mesa drivers didn't solve the problem, but I discovered what my problem was: the IGPU extension cable (a purely cosmetic cable https://www.amazon.it/dp/B085ZFFWXD ) was faulty. I replaced it and haven't had any problems for 2 days. Hours of continuous gaming without a system crash.
N.B.
I had the problem under Windows 11 too!

FWIW it's still an issue in 6.17.9.arch1-1 ![]()
@KaTsUjA - there are many reasons for specific "flip_done timed out" - but at least for me this seems clearly tied to the kernel version.
Edit: the thing to look for in this particular issue seems to be amdgpu_dm_atomic_commit_tail or maybe update_planes_and_stream_state.

Same issue here: random video hangups specially when gaming, so I have to shutdown the computer by long-pressing the power button. In my case it does not recover after some time, it keeps unresponsive forever (but if I have a YouTube video playing in the background, it remains playing and can be heard). I have a Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 video card and a Ryzen 7 9700X CPU. This happens since Linux version 6.17.8-arch1-1 until now, with all Arch packages up to date and no fancy stuff installed, all plain Gnome with Wayland. VRR is enabled in Gnome.
linux-lts kernel 6.12.61 works fine for me, as well as the regular linux kernel versions 6.17.7 and lower.
journalctl shows this last message prior to the forced hardware poweroff:
kernel: amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* [CRTC:86:crtc-0] flip_done timed outEdit: I am trying the latest linux-zen kernel 6.17.9 and it is also failing the same way. Only the 6.12.x LTS version works for me so far.
Edit 2: the recent kernel 6.18.1 is still failing, but this time no error is shown by journalctl, it just freezes so I have to poweroff the system. Video playback is still going on in the background and can be heard.
Edit 3: I just disabled VRR in Gnome Wayland, then booted kernel 6.18.1 and it didn't freeze after 8 hours of usage. Maybe it is not related to the kernel but the compositor instead.

Experiencing the same issue, specifically with Cyberpunk 2077 running in Wine on kernel 6.18.6-2. I'm actually on an arch-derivative but seeing as this seems to be widely reported, I feel like it's safe to mention here as it's not specific to my particular arch-based distro. Deeply frustrating to deal with.

Edit 3: I just disabled VRR in Gnome Wayland, then booted kernel 6.18.1 and it didn't freeze after 8 hours of usage. Maybe it is not related to the kernel but the compositor instead.

Can you confirm or reject this?

I recently installed Arch after not using Linux for many years. Is it finally year of Linux desktop? Nope, flip_done timed out.
I have a RX 7900 XTX with dual monitor setup. One has VRR and the other does not. When the flip_done timed out happens, the VRR monitor is frozen, but I can continue on the other monitor, where I save my work and reboot. I am running KDE plasma with wayland. Any graphical activity seems to make it happen. I thought it was gaming or Steam but any app that opens a window seems to be capable of causing it, but seems more likely with heavier gpu workloads.
I will try to grab logs later ( I am dual booting in windows atm ) but I recall they were pretty much the same as what has been posted. I will also try disabling VRR and see if that has any effect.

I can confirm it helps in my case.

I disabled VRR everywhere - in hardware menu in the monitor itself, in KDE plasma settings, and any mangohud, gamescope or other settings that might enable VRR. It still crashed. I was trying to record a game in obs.

Jan 25 10:57:45 garthim kernel: ---[ end trace 0000000000000000 ]---*Edit* It is now the evening. I have been gaming and other activity that would cause the crash most of the day, but no crashes yet.
The change from previous was:
- Re-enable VRR in the monitor's menu
- With VRR enabled in the monitor, the adaptive sync dropdown appears in plasma -> display configuration. I set this to "never". I had set this previously, but previously I also disabled VRR in the monitor.
The issue is intermittent. It might still be here so I'll post a follow up with status.
*Edit2*
Jan 26
It has happened again. flip_done timed out. I used flameshot to copy part of the screen. The instant I clicked the copy button it was dead.
*Edit3*
Jan 28
I switched from default arch linux 6.18 to linux-lts 6.12.67-1-lts today and will follow up if there is any improvement.
Jan 29
I have a different issue with linux-lts - I have my screen set to turn off after 10 minutes. I've came back to my machine twice and could not get it to come back on. I think the usb died?. I could not switch virtual consoles either. I had to hard reset it both times. I tried linux-zen kernel but had the same flip_done timed out issue.
I did track down the source code of that "flip_done timed out" message. It seems to be a generic error if the screen is frozen and not specific to any issue. Googling it will result in false positives going back years, so if you are here reading this, maybe look back up the stack trace further and google that.
*edit*

Is this the magic trick?
amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0x0Seems to be so. I'm not sure what I'm missing out on with everything masked, but at least I'm not crashing. I tried with and without amdgpu.dcdebugmask 0x10 or 0x12 but did not make a difference.
6.18.6-zen1-1-zen
options root=/dev/ArchinstallVg/root rw rootfstype=ext4 amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0x0 *edit*
Feb 1
Still crashing with ppfeaturemask=0x0 and dcdebugmask=0x10

I know these things can be fussy so I since re-seated the card and power connectors to make sure it is not hardware. I'll follow up if stability improves.
*edit*
2/5/2026
I have tried linux-zen (6.18), stock linux, linux-lts (6.12) with combinations of
amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0x0
amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff
amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0x00080887
amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10
amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x12
amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0xe52
still crashing
The last two masks disable all power management related stuff. I know from experience not giving boards enough power will cause problems, but it did not help here.
I am trying X11 without wayland now.
