[SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

So, my wifi is having issues, randomly crashing and restarting or not, forcing me to either restart iwlwifi myself (with modprobe) or to reboot my laptop.

This time, after a reboot, the wifi is straight up not starting. Instead, I'm seeing these during the boot sequence:

How can I fix this? I tried reinstalling linux and linux-firmware, with no success.

My laptop info:

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Looks somewhat similar to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=309631 (though that's going down in NMI_INTERRUPT_WDG and not in NMI_INTERRUPT_UMAC_FATAL)
The claim was that some older kernel didn't exhibit this, you could try eg. 6.16.4 from https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_Linux_Archive (seems if it's a regression it was backported into LTS but feel free to test that nevertheless)

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Downgrading didn't do it.

However, arch-chrooting from a live usb and reinstalling linux, linux-firmware and base did fix it (with pacman -S, not pacstrap).

I would like to understand what the issue is, and what in reinstalling from live usb is different enough than reinstalling from root to completely fix the issue at hand...

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Probably more about the usb or a hard reboot than the re-installation of anything.
Sanity check is there are parallel OS (you've two nvme's but only 3 partitions) - notably windows?

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

None of that, I got rid of Windows. The 3 partitions are just boot, root and home.

I will say though, back when I was using Windows, there was one strange behavior: Switching from my home's ADSL to my phone's 4G at 5GHz always resulted in the Wifi module crashing and restarting to connect to said phone.
That never in previous years

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

'key…

If the issue doesn't return and in general please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

You can also always re-open it if this turns out to have been a fluke.

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Well, I'm not exactly sure I can consider this solved, because wifi is still crashing from time to time, sometimes forcing me to reboot...

Your BT disconnects during the boot - try to disable asusd, supergfxd and nvidia-powerd and see whether that still happens - and whether the wifi later on crashes as well
You could also try to move iwlwifi and iwlmvm into the initramfs (MODULES array of your mkinitcpio.conf) to hopefully load them before all the userspace action happens and maybe sidestep the problem this way.

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Disabling supergfx and nvidia-powerd didn't change the issue, it still crashes. I tried disabling asusd, but got this

The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy=, RequiredBy=, UpheldBy=,
Also=, or Alias= settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance= for
template units). This means they are not meant to be enabled or disabled using systemctl.

Possible reasons for having these kinds of units are:
• A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's
  .wants/, .requires/, or .upholds/ directory.
• A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has
  a requirement dependency on it.
• A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer,
D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...).
• In case of template units, the unit is meant to be enabled with some
  instance name specified.

And moving iwlwifi and iwlmvm into the initramfs made it worse: The wifi not working at all.

I will say, I had made this short script to try and restore the wifi when it crashes. It works most of the time, but sometimes it says it can't find "wlan0", forcing me to reboot...
And sometimes, it crashes very quickly, so I end up using this command multiple times within minutes.

#!/bin/bash
set -euo pipefail
if [ "$EUID" -ne 0 ]; then
  exec sudo -- "$0" "$@"
fi
ip link set wlan0 down
nmcli radio wifi off
rmmod iwlmvm
rmmod iwlwifi
modprobe iwlwifi
nmcli radio wifi on

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

pacman -Ql asusctl | grep service

Disable those and then please post an updated journal covering the crashes

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Considering I still couldn't disable it, I straight up uninstalled asusctl.

Here's the journal on this boot, which has the wifi still not working: https://0x0.st/KfmE.txt

So, my wifi is having issues … this time

I assume this means it's not a (recent) regression?

There's https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=310252 - do you "iw dev wlan0 set power_save on" as in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_ … interfaces ?

There's a USB controller on the same bus and it has

Nov 17 16:12:48 tuf-arch-toto kernel: usb 3-3: Product: moto g72
Nov 17 16:12:48 tuf-arch-toto kernel: usb 3-3: Manufacturer: motorola
Nov 17 16:12:48 tuf-arch-toto kernel: usb 3-3: SerialNumber: ZY22H3MWC7

(and a webcam)
Do you run into this when not attaching that phone? (Or are you only using it for tethering because of the iwlwifi crashes itfp?)

It's a wild guess, but since it happens right after setting the regdom (which albeit is an early step, so…)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wpa_su … figuration
What if you tell the regulatory domain to gfi and don't set that?

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

I'm not sure. It has been acting up for the past week or two, but it's only got worse and worse. So I'd say that it is pretty recent, but downgrading the firmware didn't solve anything.

There is no file in /etc/udev/rules.d/ , so I'm going to assume I haven't set power_save on for the network interfaces.

Yes, the phone is there for tethering. Let me try and see what happens when I unplug and reboot...
https://0x0.st/KfaQ.txt
This time, the wifi crash happens later, not at boot.

As for the WPA Supplicant thing... I'm not sure I understand what you mean?

In any case, I am wondering if there isn't something wrong with my install...
As an unrelated issue, a third of the times when I boot, sddm doesn't even appear (backscreen with tty cursor at top left, no mouse, can switch to tty3).
Maybe I'd be better off switching to something like EndeavourOS, but that's if I'm desperate

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

One thing to note is that the wifi crashes, but also restores itself automatically, if I don't touch it or try to restart it manually. It's just not instantaneous, and the crash is still happening.

Neither did the kernel?
Which version did you downgrade to, the one you were running before this happened the first time?

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

The downgrade was to kernel 6.16.4 and firmware 20250808, which I'm sure is from way before the issues started, considering it's from before I even deleted Windows in October, and I didn't have any wifi issue until the past few weeks.

I'm... not sure.
I thought I had plugged my phone only after the wifi issue occurred, but maybe not?

Well... I just did a reboot, and so far, no wifi crash yet in over 10 minutes. I even had time to do a pacman update and a flatpak update.

Is there a tool I could get that can diagnose my laptop's peripheral manager? Because it also struggled reading my Ventoy flash drive, and I'm wondering if the issue might be in the hardware.

As for the sddm fix, thank you, I'm trying that out

Get some live distro like grml.org and see whether the specific USB port acts up w/ that, too. If yes, it's the hardware.
The first thing I'd test would be the cable (ftr, was the cable plugged when you're getting the "device descriptor read/64, error -71"  before actually attaching the phone?) - the specific flash drive might be unrelated, but you'd then test attaching other devices there.

If random devices attached (usb key, keyboard, etc.) all cause the same (and notably also on the live distro and the installed system) it's the usb port or hub.
Do you have any BIOS/UEFI options itr (usb legacy mode, always on for charging external devices etc et pp)?

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

I don't think I have touched any of those UEFI options, but I'm not sure.

By the way, the crash happened. I did not plug my phone at all this time, I simply restarted the wifi.
https://0x0.st/Kf1k.txt

There might be a lot of noise, due to me doing some apps update, but the first issue seem to start occuring at 22:49:31.

We're currently *much* closer to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=309631 - but on a different firmware version.
With

The downgrade was to kernel 6.16.4 and firmware 20250808

the problem seems neither kernel nor firmware and wpa_supplicant was last updated on 2025-01-28

You're both running plasma/powerdevil and there's https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=310252

iw dev wlan0 get power_save

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

[totoshampoin@tuf-arch-toto ~]$ iw dev wlan0 get power_save
Power save: on

Wait, does that mean my wifi is randomly going to sleep?

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Yes. (Well, sorta. Technically. And actually it crashes)

sudo iw dev wlan0 set power_save off

see whether the problem remains (this is transient and will reset at least w/ a reboot, so keep in mind and an eye on the current value)

From your surprise I take that you've not configured https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_ … interfaces yourself?

grep -r power_save /{usr/lib,etc}/udev/rules.d/

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

I have not. Admitedly, I used the archinstall script, but even if I did follow the install guide, I'm pretty sure I would have glossed that one over.

No power_save rule whatsoever.
I guess I should add an 81-wifi-nopowersave.rules

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", KERNEL=="wl*", RUN+="/usr/bin/iw dev $name set power_save off"

Re: [SOLVED](?) iwlwifi crashes randomly, sometimes fails to start on boot

Assuming this to be critical, we need to figure where it's coming from (apparently not udev or the kernel)
If you disable your udev rule and only boot the rescue.target (2nd link below) and check "iw dev wlan0 get power_save", is it already enabled?
If not, what after starting the multi-user.target and then the graphical.target?
