autologin console (solved)

Hi all

What I would like to do is have a user (jack) login to console vc1 automatically on boot.

I've found this wiki page:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Aut … on_startup

which is useful.  The recommended method says to use a "mingetty" package, but I can't find this in the AUR.

Is this still the recommended method? if so where do I get mingetty? I've only ever used pacman packages so this could be a new experience for me.

Thanks in advance

Jack

Re: autologin console (solved)

Mingetty is an old piece of software: it works with some patches for debian, but it is unmaintained. I contributed a PKGBUILD for it in the AUR, but I removed it when I realized that it was unmaintained. Now the preferred method is the other one, which works fine, is perfectly correct and safe (well, one can think that autologin is unsafe in general, but this is another problem which we do not want do discuss now). The wiki should be fixed accordingly, I will do this.

Re: autologin console (solved)

Firstly, sorry for the delay in replying, the inverter card for the backlight in my LCD was failing, and I couldn't see to reply:(.

Thanks for your input, I've now got the second approach (using a C program) to work.

Securitywise: My laptop is protected by a BIOS password, otherwise my helpful flatmates would stick a live CD in it to teach me the error of may ways in not properly securing my system.  I certainly wouldn't wish to start my computer with no passwords at all in that environment!

Thanks again for your help.
