Unlocking screen shows no desktop, only black screen with mouse cursor

I am running KDE plasma and Wayland. System is updated as of today.

Sometimes I will leave my PC on and go walk the dog for example. When I come back, the screen is locked. I will enter my password and unlock the computer, but all I see is a black screen with a mouse cursor.

I can tty to another virtual console if required, but returning to the default, I still see only a black screen with a mouse cursor.

I can Alt+F2 and get a run dialog box allowing me to start certain applications. For instance, I can open xterm, and it will display the terminal window.

Is there some way to fix this? Do I have some configuration set that is failing to restart the display manager (or something)?

Appreciate any help.

Sounds like plasmashell crashes?
Check the system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b

and look for https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Core_d … _core_dump
