Blank screen issue with Euro Truck Simulator 2, NVIDIA + Wayland

Hi,

I'm having an issue with Euro Truck Simulator 2 on my setup. I want to specify that I've been playing this game for a long time, this is the first time I'm encountering this issue. Before I was able to play the game at medium/high graphics settings at 60/80 FPS, so I think that an update broke something.

The issue:
While I'm playing, at random times (sometimes just after launch, sometimes after minutes playing), the video starts lagging (but the game goes on) and, after a while, the monitor starts going black and, in some seconds, it gives me the "Input Not Supported" error, forcing me to restart. If I switch workspace before the "input not supported error", the desktop session recovers (but I have to stop the game). When it recovers it can also be in an inconsistent state (splitted monitor or lag) for some seconds or needing logout/login.

What I've done:
The first thing I did was checking my GPU temps, but they were okay (never exceeding 51°C while in game), so are the other system temps. I also tried running other games (Besiege, Minecraft) but none of them gives me the same issue, and I have overall good performances. I tried also switching off variable refresh rate, reducing game graphic settings and using the game in window mode. I even tried reducing the refresh rate from 165Hz to 120Hz. I tried proton, the issue seems to disappear (and this gave me compatibility issue vibes), but the performances becomes really poor. I also thought of performance issues due to a game update, but I think in this case is some combination of NVIDIA drivers + Wayland because the game doesn't freeze completely (it continues running even if the screen goes black) and when the issue is not present it works normally at 60/80 FPS.

What I haven't tried:
I haven't tried downgrading the NVIDIA drivers, I never encountered this issue before so I thought it's better to collect some more information before doing so. The last time I downgraded a driver I had lots of issues to address and it went really bad (but maybe I'm only a newbie).

System context:
I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 (I know, a little bit old), AMD Ryzen 5 1400, 8GB of RAM with 8GB of swap (but even with ETS, I never reach max use) and an NVME SSD (just for reference, I don't think it's important in this case). The system is using GNOME + Wayland and it's updated, so is using the latest NVIDIA driver on the arch repositories (580.105.08-4).

System log:
This is the output of journalctl (journalctl -b -1 | grep -Ei "nvidia|xid|gpu") if I look for nvidia/xid/gpu logs: https://pastebin.com/qrupuUp3

I hope I gave enough context and that someone can help me solving this issue, I sincerily have no other ideas smile

Have a nice day

And post full output of journalctl output.

Thanks for your reply. I have to add some more strange things. Yesterday, waiting for an answer, I tried to use another version of Proton (Proton 8), and the game worked, I mean, I had pretty good performances but with some input lag.
Today, I wanted to provide a full journalctl output with a fresh boot, so I disabled proton and run the game as native.
The thing is, the game stopped crashing. It crashed only when I changed the volume and the gnome pop up showed up, freezing the game. Then I restarted it, it worked again, it crashed only when I tried to change my graphic settings to something lower (I was trying different graphic options).
You can clearly see this two moments in the log, because it's when Xid 69 message appears.

At this point, I'm really confused about what's going on.

Here is the journalctl of today: https://pastebin.com/xiRW5RbN

Re: Blank screen issue with Euro Truck Simulator 2, NVIDIA + Wayland

I'm not specialist with Xid errors - read everything you need from site and subsites I post you in link and follow, except don't install nvidia drivers or software outside of pacman and arch linux or you will have to clean system from files NOT installed by pacman when you try to upgrade - conflicting files error.

Try different DE on Wayland, like sway. Try even X server with some simple DE.
Gnome is heavily changing recently and may be unstable and crashing.

You may also post coredumpctl logs
