Hi,
I've been recently distro hopping, and I wanted to check out CachyOS, I noticed when doing a lot of system updates sudo pacman -Syu it would inform that a reboot was needed, also because I used dunst I'd get a popup OSD notification informing as well.
I've used Arch in the past, but recently got back into using Arch, and since then I have not noticed once any reboot messages after doing a system update.
I read online that pacman has been updated, especially with kernel updates that it's suppose to inform you to reboot. Today I updated the system, there was a kernel update, but no reboot notification.
So I am only asking because I don't know what pacman should be doing, and if it should be giving a notification, then I'm not seeing it.
Here's a screen shot taken today with a kernel update, the entire output and no mention of a reboot required. THANKS!

Except a reboot isn't required. Why should pacman tell you it is?

The only time you need to reboot off of a kernel update is if you need to load new modules that haven't yet been loaded. Depending on your usecase this is not strictly necessary during whatever boot you're running on and there are various mechanisms to keep the running (old) kernel functional even for new modules, like https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/an … ules-hook/

Hello,
Sorry @V1del about the image, I didn't think about this.
As I mentioned I've used Arch in the past, I'm not new to Linux, and to be honest, I don't know if it's just some Arch based distros that are going overboard on this. But on CachyOS dunst was always popping up the OSD notification and telling me the system needed a reboot every time I turned around with updates, and let me tell you, it was a lot, so I'm not sure what was going on with CachyOS and all the rebooting notifications.
There was a kernel and nvidia driver update, and I did need to reboot, because some of the mods weren't working unless I rebooted. So I am aware of how this all works, sorry I didn't clarify/explain myself better.
I was just trying to figure out if pacman would notify that a reboot was needed in certain circumstances, because I thought I read online that pacman had changed to do this.
The real reasons I wanted to know this, which my mistake I failed to mention, I wasn't sure if dunst was some how broke and not working correctly, as to the reasons I wasn't seeing a notifcation.
I got my head so wrapped up recently with CachyOS before I went back to Arch, I assumed what was going on was also the same with Arch, I guess the CachyOS Dev Team changed things... hmm
THANKS

No. Some alpm hook might, though.

Likely.

notify-send SNAFUIf that works, dunst is ok. SNAFU, one might say ![]()

Have a look at /usr/share/libalpm/hooks/cachyos-reboot-required.hook

https://github.com/CachyOS/cachyos-hook … t-required - "recommended" because of the rather exhaustive list in https://github.com/CachyOS/cachyos-hook … uired.hook (for ~half of those you don't even have to reboot to apply the update, why you'd reboot or do anything after the initrfamfs buildsystem updated is probably a secret)

SNAFU works LOL
I see OSD nofications, sorry I didn't elaborate, I wasn't seeing them supposedly for a system reboot, thinking that was broke.
So I guess CachyOS is going a bit thick on the Reboot Sauce with this then... LOL
THANKS

no. if i dont want to reboot my system i dont have to, it should advise on rebooting but this would be a dumb change, it shouldnt say its required..

@seth I do need to do better on that... Sorry to anyone if that was a problem, I will certainly watch that next time.
@system72 my problem, I've been Distro Hopping around to much lately. My main distro has been Slackware for a very long time, of course no such thing in Slack, so I hear ya.
When I started distro hopping around, and let's face it, Slack isn't what you would consider up to date on many things, more about stability, so pkgs can be years old.
SO, when I started jumping back into more bleeding edge rolling release distros, I wasn't sure if there had been some changes, for a lack of better wording, more modern linux world, where reboots were starting to become the norm, with you seeing this on other distros.
THANKS
