Hello

Hello, Im new to arch, ive used uBuntu before, and i recently have been using fedora core 6. Ive had some trouble with fedora core so im looking for a distro that i control. I want to have a simple distro that doesnt come loaded with crap. Im also a software developer(or trying to be one big_smile). The only reason i still have windows is for gaming which i tend to not do so much anymore. Arch looks like a very good distrobution and ive heard many great things about it. After I install i will be posting again , hopefully no problems will occur.

Re: Hello

Welcome to the Arch community. I hope you enjoy this distribution. I am not using it for very long yet, but I simply love it.

Re: Hello

You have window$ installed??!! OMG WTF... LOL??

I think I just got on my own nerves writing that line. smile
I've been around here for about 4 years, with the only system instability introduced by either myself during cataclysmic moments of poor judgement or a dust blanket collecting on my CPU... oh and ndiswrapper locking my laptop whenever I used it in a specific building at my university.  That was a strange time.  Application updates are much less troublesome than fedora.  Although the only time I used fedora (core 2, maybe?) I broke it to a ridiculous amount just trying to update the system so I'm probably not the best person to compare the systems.

You'll find Arch to be what you make of it. Only your skills as a linux user limit what is possible...

Re: Hello

the biggest change when i came from fedora core 5 to arch was the package manager. here i don't have any dependency finding problems like yum often had and pacman is just lighting fast smile. in (very) short time i learned how to edit rc.conf to change my system initialization and write PKGBUILDs to build my own packages (there is almost no coding here, it feels like just giving a description of the package tongue) and much much more. with arch you install what you need, not uninstall what you don't need, so your system isn't bloated (except if you want it to be tongue). at first i missed the GUI's but found out that editing text files is in most cases faster. and the best thing with arch is that i'm feeling in control of a system cool. oh and i almost forgot, the community here is just great!

Re: Hello

Well i setup my partition for 1gb swap and 18g for Arch. I set the mount points and then i selected the packages. While installing the packages from cd i got an error from the package. Should i try installing through ftp? Im going to reburn the cd also. Also can someone point me in the direction of an installation guide for arch? Sorry I am at school and I dont have much time to look right now.

Re: Hello

Alright, I just got done configuring the disks, configuring the packages, installing the packages, installing the kernel, and installing the bootloader. I can dual boot windows and linux smile so that is a good thing. Now once i boot into linux there is obviously no desktop environments installed. I have just a command shell. Im going to read the beginners guide to see what to do next, but im so happy that i actually got it on my system with winbloze and arch together. big_smile

P.S. I had trouble with the packages on the CD so i just installed from FTP. Went alot smoother. Maybe my cd burner sucks or the disc sucked. Oh well.
