[SOLVED] Black screen after resuming from suspend

Hi,

Not sure if Newbie Corner is appropriate for this question, but as I am unsure of the origin of the problem, I don't know which section would be more fitting.

I have a problem specific to X11 (I don't have it on Wayland). When I put my computer to sleep with `systemctl suspend`, and I try to wake it up, I only have a black screen, no cursor and my keyboard does not seems to work (I can't switch to a TTY). But, when I ssh onto it, and kill awesome (or i3), I'm sent back to the TTY, as expected.

My main idea was a problem linked to Nvidia, but I don't see why I couldn't reproduce it on wayland compositor given Nvidia reputation with those. And I've tried what is in the wiki about black screen and NVidia, but it didn't work. Haven't had any success with what I found on the forum, but I tried a few things, and some may have badly interacted with each others without me noticing it.

I am using `nvidia-open-dkms`, with the default kernel, I have `linux-firmware-nvidia` installed. I term of boot options, for Nvidia, I have

options nvidia-drm modeset=1 fbdev=1

in `/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf`

I haven't seen anything useful, or at least that speak to me, in the logs.

Here are some log after the resume started.

I don't have NVIDIA, but it sounds similar to:

Re: [SOLVED] Black screen after resuming from suspend

I don't think this is the same problem. In this case, I think I should also have the problem on wayland.

To be on the safe side, I've tested with the kernel parameter given in the thread to deactivate IOMMU, but no change.

Edit:

I thought it may be linked to https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kern … issues/472
But setting nvidia.NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=0 in the kernel parameters does not solve the issue.

I also tried removing all xorg file nvidia may have created in /etc/X11, didn't help. Recreating them with nvidia-xconfig neither. Currently, the only xorg config I have contains:

# Written by systemd-localed(8), read by systemd-localed and Xorg. It's
# probably wise not to edit this file manually. Use localectl(1) to
# update this file.
Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "system-keyboard"
        MatchIsKeyboard "on"
        Option "XkbLayout" "fr"
EndSection

I don't think it should cause problems.

Re: [SOLVED] Black screen after resuming from suspend

"options nvidia-drm modeset=1 fbdev=1" is the default since some 560 or 570 driver anyway.

acpi_os=Linux

acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2015"

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo … inacpi-osi

My main idea was a problem linked to Nvidia

Possibly…

[ 4272.503680] kitty[4176]: segfault at c8 ip 00007fb1d2a39e77 sp 00007ffe147a8670 error 4 in libnvidia-glcore.so.580.105.08[a39e77,7fb1d2400000+c00000] likely on CPU 8 (core 0, socket 0)

But setting nvidia.NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=0 in the kernel parameters does not solve the issue.

Did you also disable the services?

Fwwi, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=310125
There've been a bunch of threads where the framebuffer switch fails because of some attached input devices.

Do you have access to a $5 wired mouse and keyboard from office supply?

I saw that, tried it, but couldn't get the kernel to start. I'll retry. I don't understand either what this means.

I killed awesome, this is probably the why of this segfault (I could connect through SSH to the computer, thats how I realised it was an Xorg problem and not a system freeze, but apparently I failed to report that in the opening post).

I was not aware of that. I don't have a cheap keyboard, but I do still have my old Corsair.

I tried to switch to a TTY and back with and without the keyboard, and it confirm this seems to be the problem, thanks!

As to solve it, following the threads, I did:

and tried both reloading with the command and rebooting the computer.
But I still have the issue, and I'm still seeing:

in Xorg logs, and udev still report:

Did I missed something in the thread?

Also, I noticed the keyboard was also reporting as a mouse, so I also created:

# cat /etc/udev/hwdb.d/71-mouse.hwdb
id-input-modalias:input:*v3297p1969*
  ID_INPUT_MOUSE=

But it seems all those files/rules are ignored.

Re: [SOLVED] Black screen after resuming from suspend

Hey, if you're having that old Nvidia X11 suspend issue, try turning off fbdev=1 but keep modeset=1 on. Or, you could just switch to Wayland—that usually makes things wake up smoothly.

Re: [SOLVED] Black screen after resuming from suspend

@Virus1x, we've already isolated the keyboard as problem, specifically it showing up as joystick.
@ElricleNecro

stat /etc/udev/hwdb.d/70-keyboard.hwdb

and try

evdev:input:*v3297p1969*

That'd be the common pattern, there's no id-input-modalias anywhere in /usr/lib/udev/hwdb.d/ so I'm not sure the suggestion there is actually correct (sorry, didn't closely read the post before sharing it)

The mouse device status is probably ok.

I applied your correction, the file seems to be used after the update (`systemd-hwdb update -s`), but it didn't fix it. And after a reboot, I'm still seeing (and the problem still being there) :

...
[ 210.520] (**) Option "Device" "/dev/input/event4"
[ 210.522] (II) event4 - ZSA Technology Labs Moonlander Mark I System Control: is tagged by udev as: Keyboard Joystick

[ 210.523] (II) event4 - ZSA Technology Labs Moonlander Mark I System Control: device is a keyboard
...

and `udevadm info` still show `ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK=1`. So the content is clearly ignored, or something does not match the keyboard in the rule.

  ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK=

(FYI: running systemd-hwdb does update the access time of the file, but a reboot does not, maybe that could be a hint)

Maybe there is a way to test what udev rules are applied.

Re: [SOLVED] Black screen after resuming from suspend

Compared /usr/lib/udev/hwdb.d/60-input-id.hwdb
It's actually

id-input:modalias:input:*v3297p1969*

(nb. the colon before "modalias" instead of the dash)

It worked !!!!!!!
THANK YOU !!!!

I'm curious about why it started to act like this during summer, but it works, it is the most important !

To resume: it was the keyboard that, for an unknown reason, started to badly interact with Xorg when resuming from suspend. To fix it, we need to create a udev file looking like :

cat /etc/udev/hwdb.d/70-keyboard.hwdb
id-input:modalias:input:*v3297p1969*
  ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK=

where `v3297` must be replace (for other devices) by `v${VENDOR_ID}` and `p1969` by `p${PRODUCT_ID}`.
Then run

systemd-hwdb update -s

to ask udev to update its rules.
