Xorg or Xfree 4.4?

I want to update the X server, but i cant decide on which to go, as Arch hasnt taken an official position i think...

I want to go with Xorg, but i dont know how this is working, what are the real differences and if there will be any kind of incompatibilities...

Any tips are welcome lol

Re: Xorg or Xfree 4.4?

Be brave, try x.org I like it, and soon enough arch may follow but then again it might not  big_smile   Plus if you don't like it or find it buggy (besides reporting the bugs) you can easily pacman -R it and grab xfree....

Yes, it is, and you can add the testing repository to your pacman.conf now too.

Re: Xorg or Xfree 4.4?

is this still necessary?

Yea, the next x release will provide xfree86.

For now, you can manually make x provide xfree86 by editing /var/lib/pacman/local/x-11R6.7.0-1t1/depends and putting xfree86 in the %PROVIDES% field.
Code:

...

%CONFLICTS%
ttf-bitstream-vera

%PROVIDES%
x-server
xfree86

it works if you add xfree86 in %PROVIDES% but this should be done automatically tongue

Re: Xorg or Xfree 4.4?

ArchLinux no longer under this page:
http://www.xfree86.org/distro-support.html

I suspect a background story about this removal that of course I and many many others {I believe} welcome, because that reference about AL in that page could result in bad reputation about AL {as it does about SlackWare}

Re: Xorg or Xfree 4.4?

I actually e-mailed them saying that they spelt pacman wrong and that arch is testing x.org's release.  So I guess they just assumed we were going to dump xfree86, which is probably correct.
