Arch is failing to sleep on HP Probook 450 G8 with TLP

Hi guys, I'm fairly new to Arch, I'm currently using a HP Probook 450 G8 with TLP, this is my system info:

OS: Arch Linux x86_64
Host: HP ProBook 450 G8 Notebook PC (SBKPFV3)
Kernel: Linux 6.18.2-arch2-1
CPU: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1135G7 (8) @ 4.20 GHz
GPU 1: NVIDIA GeForce MX450 [Discrete]
GPU 2: Intel Iris Xe Graphics @ 0.50 GHz [Integrated]
Memory: 3.88 GiB / 15.35 GiB (25%)

I'm experiencing crashing after suspending my laptop with tlp, with my gpu heating up significantly, and significant battery percentage drop.
I have tried following the tutorial on using TLP with PRIME https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/TLP#PR … DIA_driver but to no avail
Here is my journalctl output up to the suspend point

# ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
# /etc/tlp.conf - TLP user configuration (version 1.9.0)

# Settings are read in the following order:
#
# 1. Intrinsic defaults
# 2. /etc/tlp.d/*.conf - Drop-in customization snippets
# 3. /etc/tlp.conf - User configuration (this file)
#
# Power Profiles: a part of TLP's parameters is divided into two or three
# groups:
# - performance: parameters ending in _AC are used when AC power is
# connected or when the command 'tlp performance' is run.
# - balanced: parameters ending in _BAT are used when operating
# on battery power or when the command 'tlp balanced' is run.
# - power-saver: parameters ending in _SAV are used when the command
# 'tlp power-saver' is run. If there is no _SAV parameter available
# for a feature, the _BAT parameter will be used instead.
# - Any remaining parameters not divided apply to all power profiles.
#
# Please note:
# - If parameters are specified more than once, the last occurrence takes
# precedence. This also means that any parameters defined here will take
# precedence over any drop-ins.
# - You can however, append values to a parameter already defined as intrinsic
# default or in a previously read file: use PARAMETER+="add values".
# - Important: all parameters are disabled here. Remove the leading '#' if you
# want to enable a feature without a default or if you want to set a value
# other than the default.
# - Parameters must always be specified for all power profiles, i.e. in the
# AC, BAT and SAV category (where applicable). If you omit one of them,
# the missing profile will receive its value from another profile, since
# a change will only occur if different values are defined.
# - To completely disable a parameter, use PARAMETER="".
# Legend for defaults:
# - Default *: intrinsic default that is effective when the parameter is
# missing or the line has a leading #'.
# - Default <none>: do nothing or use kernel/hardware defaults.
#
# ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
# tlp - Parameters for power saving

# Set to 0 to disable, 1 to enable TLP.
# Default: 1

#TLP_ENABLE=1

# Set to 1 to deactivate all intrinsic defaults of TLP. This means that
# TLP only applies settings that have been explicitly activated i.e.
# parameters without a leading '#'.
# Notes:
# - Helpful if one wants to use only selected features of TLP
# - After activation, use tlp-stat -c to display your effective configuration

cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/control
lsmod | grep -E "nvidia|nouveau"
cat /etc/default/grub

can you share the output of these?
and also these

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0000:01:00.0/power
tlp-stat -s -p -g
systemctl status nvidia-suspend nvidia-resume nvidia-hibernate

Re: Arch is failing to sleep on HP Probook 450 G8 with TLP

the output of  cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/control is

auto

the output of lsmod | grep -E "nvidia|nouveau" is:

nvidia_uvm 3858432 0
nvidia_drm 147456 4
nvidia_modeset 1933312 2 nvidia_drm
nvidia 111591424 38 nvidia_uvm,nvidia_drm,nvidia_modeset
drm_ttm_helper 16384 2 nvidia_drm,xe
video 81920 3 xe,i915,nvidia_modeset

I'm currently using systemd-boot so can you provide the alternative for cat /etc/default/grub for systemd-boot

Thank you

Re: Arch is failing to sleep on HP Probook 450 G8 with TLP

auto

is good
and in the logs

User sessions remain unfrozen on explicit request ($SYSTEMD_SLEEP_FREEZE_USER_SESSIONS=0)

This means systemd is skipping user-session freezing during suspend. While not an error by itself, this can contribute to resume issues on some systems using the proprietary NVIDIA driver, since userspace processes may still hold GPU resources. In your case its unlikely to be a cause.

edit: I think its because of TLP config regression, try testing suspend without tlp.

Re: Arch is failing to sleep on HP Probook 450 G8 with TLP

From your outputs/configs, there is kind of a potential conflict between TLP runtime PM and NVIDIA’s own power management.
You have "TLP_DISABLE_DEFAULTS=1", default settings are ignored.
At the same time, the log shows

Starting NVIDIA system suspend actions...
nvidia-suspend.service
Finished NVIDIA system suspend actions.

This indicates NVIDIA’s suspend hooks are active, so the driver expects to manage the GPU power state itself. Having both TLP and NVIDIA manage the same device can result in undefined suspend behavior.
Before drawing conclusions, please share the output of:

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0000:01:00.0/power

Re: Arch is failing to sleep on HP Probook 450 G8 with TLP

here is the output of cat /proc/drive/nvidia/gpus/0000:01:00.0/power:

Runtime D3 status: Enabled (fine-grained)
Video Memory: Off

GPU Hardware Support:
 Video Memory Self Refresh: Supported
 Video Memory Off: Supported

S0ix Power Management:
 Platform Support: Supported
 Status: Disabled

Notebook Dynamic Boost: Not Supported

Uninstalling TLP enables my system to suspend normally, so its definitely a conflict between TLP and Nvidia but i just don't know how to solve it.

Re: Arch is failing to sleep on HP Probook 450 G8 with TLP

yes
and for tlp try commenting out (for example: #TLP_DISABLE_DEFAULTS=1)

TLP_DISABLE_DEFAULTS=1

in its config

Re: Arch is failing to sleep on HP Probook 450 G8 with TLP

RUNTIME_PM_ENABLE="01:00.0"

try commenting it out, ok ik I read the wiki and it says

PRIME with NVIDIA driver
If you are running PRIME with NVIDIA driver, do not disable power management for the GPU in TLP. Instead, you may want to enable power management all the time to prevent your laptop from heating by adding the NVIDIA card PCI ID (lspci -d 10de::03xx) to the variable RUNTIME_PM_ENABLE:

/etc/tlp.conf
RUNTIME_PM_ENABLE="01:00.0"

but for testing do this, may be this is for generic or whatever I'm not saying it's wrong but the internet has mixed opinion about "RUNTIME_PM_ENABLE="01:00.0"" becuase some say in specific cases NVIDIA drivers manage it own which might explains "Uninstalling TLP enables my system to suspend normally"  for you specific device **testing purposes** only try commenting it  out...

and you said

Uninstalling TLP enables my system to suspend normally

try reverting TLP to pure defaults (no custom runtime PM rules).

edit: if that also did'nt work and if suspend reliability is the priority I recommend stop using it and check out alternatives...
because your logs show correct suspend sequence and tlp might be the reason for the NVIDIA GPU does not actually enter low-power state even though nvidia-suspend.service runs.
maybe we wasted time on tlp like it might be the issue from the vendor about sleeps...

Re: Arch is failing to sleep on HP Probook 450 G8 with TLP

After restoring defaults for tlp, i just found out (maybe) the cause of the crash.
My RAM suspend mode is deep, this is the output cat /sys/power/mem_sleep :

cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
s2idle [deep]

The system crashes when i enable deep sleep, how do i make deep sleep work with tlp?

If that's the case I think There is nothing TLP can do to “make deep sleep work” in this case, like becuase TLP does not implement suspend, it only selects which sleep mode the kernel uses. If the system crashes when deep is selected but works with s2idle, then S3 is broken on this platform. and in this case it might be HP firmware bug or quirk where firmware/ACPI support for S3 is incomplete or buggy, on that cases only real fix is a BIOS/UEFI update from the vendor and guess what? HP often delivers them through Windows-based tools only, depending on the model.

Apologies for my earlier assumption regarding TLP runtime PM and RUNTIME_PM_ENABLE="01:00.0", which likely distracted from the actual issue. And also That would also explain why removing TLP appeared to help — it likely caused the system to fall back to s2idle. This avoids the broken S3 path but does not fix it. Treating TLP removal as a workaround is reasonable if suspend reliability is the priority.  sad

yeah your'e welcome.. and wasted a ton of  time and mislead about the issue sorry about that...
but wait for the vendor if they review and changed about S3 integrations with increasing consumers complains and feedback on a new update...
