Dell Pro Max 16 Premium MA16250 - camera not working

Everything else works actually quite fine with this new laptop, but the webcam is currently broken. There are no errors listed, but the webcam does not appear in cam -l or is accessible

it detects the sensor, but it wont show up in the camera settings (cam -l). There is something listed in v4fl, but when I try to access the camera that firefox or zoom are displaying as ipu6 device it doesn't work at all and just stops immediately. this is a Dell Inc. Dell Pro Max 16 Premium MA16250 . Any idea if this can be made to run? Tried everything I found on the net and in this thread nothing worked until now.

Which kernel version is this on? AFAIU the IPU6 webcam stuff was just recently added to the kernel and is not yet super mature / feature complete with regards to the supported models

Always the latest rn 6.15.9-arch1-1 . I tried also installing all the packages from intel and various other things i found here on the forum. But nothing works.

If i try to play with ffplay i get this error

Could you also try the latest release candidate for mainline linux?

i did now, doesn't help, only one change I could see is that OBS no longer segfaults on this kernel, otherwise cam -l still empty.

the obs fault turned out to be a problem with the libva-vdpau-driver that had to be removed. rest remains

It won't solve your problem with Arch but I have the ma14250, I'm using the ubuntu distribution provided by dell (available here: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us … 50-laptop) and the camera is working. I believe the main difference with "vanilla" 24.04 LTS is the kernel used (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/OEMKernel).
I tried to install Arch and it was not working great compared to this Ubuntu version.

I got his working on Dell Pro Max 14 Premium MA14250 with the latest kernel 6.18.3-arch1-1. I guess the same should work on your MA16250 as well.

I followed the instructions by reacocard on this other thread, with the addition that the AUR package intel-vision-drivers-dkms-git seems also required on my laptop.

These are the full steps I took (with duplication from the thread linked above):

  1. Install dkms and intel-vision-drivers-dkms-git (AUR).
    Load the module at boot by creating the file:

    # /etc/modules-load.d/intel_cvs.conf

  2. Install from the AUR icamerasrc-git and v4l2-relayd. The former pulls in these extra AUR dependencies: intel-ipu6-dkms-git, intel-ipu6-camera-bin and intel-ipu6-camera-hal-git.

  3. Configure v4l2-relayd by creating the files:

    # /etc/v4l2-relayd.d/intel-ipu.conf

# GStreamer source element name:
VIDEOSRC="icamerasrc"

# Output format, width, height, and frame rate:
FORMAT=NV12
WIDTH=1920
HEIGHT=1080

  6. Enable PipeWire support in Chromium with the flag --enable-features=WebRtcPipeWireCamera, or in Firefox by setting media.webrtc.camera.allow-pipewire = true in about:config.

Point 1 alone is sufficient to get the camera working with libcamera (test with qcam from libcamera-tools/). However, the image is greenish, and I can't get it to work with browsers in e.g. Google Meet. It seems that the image is OK in qcam because it uses the highest resolution, but in Google Meet at 720p or 1080p the image is completely unintelligible, looks like old TV static.

Point 2+ pulls in the proprietary stack by Intel, and uses v4l2-relayd to create a new virtual camera "V4L2 Loopback 1" that will use the proprietary stack. The image quality is much better, and most of all it's working in Google Meet.

This setup is now working for me, but if someone finds a way of skipping Point 2, or reducing the Intel AUR dependencies, that would be great!
