my friend is unable to get her laptop NIC working and I said i'd ask for her ..
its one of those dell laptops with a 3com NIC...not sure why but its flat not detecting it during install and of course since AL doesn't installl a source kerne this is awkward....
any ideas why its not detecting and if there is a way to manually do it during installl ??

from CD..are you trying to tell me the kernel source is on the base CD installer ?..if so that would work...anyway if there is a way to get her speicific NIC module installed as well instead of going kernel route that would be better atm..

all I think about is that you need to modprobe the appropriate module... but for 3com there are many modules existing which could be responsible for this notebook. Normally they are all in the stock archlinux kernel (in both 2.4 and 2.6)
Anyway: If you are installing from cd you could install the archsystem without configuring the card and finish installing. After that you pass the tool hwd http://amlug.net/new-projects/hwd/How-To-Install on floppy to your friend (or usb-stick or anything). After that hwd will recognize (hopefully) the correct card, you can modprobe it and voila
