Microphone input/line in just gives me noise

I use a headset with a microphone and a standard exibel jack splitter. When I connect my headset it shows up as a microphone, but the only microphone input I am getting is noise. I am using a Gigabyte Gaming Plus B650 if that's in any way useful.
