netinfo – minimal CLI tool to show verifiable network info

Hello everyone,

I’d like to share a small CLI tool I’ve been working on called netinfo.

netinfo is a minimal command-line utility for Linux that displays network and system information in a clean and predictable way. The main goal of this tool is to only show information that can be verified, without guessing or misleading output.

For example, netinfo intentionally does not display IP-based geolocation (city/coordinates), since that data is often inaccurate depending on ISP and database. Instead, it focuses on data that is reliable and useful for troubleshooting or quick checks.

What netinfo shows:

* Public IP and local IP
* IP version (IPv4 / IPv6)
* ASN and organization (ISP)
* Reverse DNS (if available)
* Estimated network type based on ASN (mobile, fiber, etc.)
* System info: OS, kernel, architecture, hostname
* Terminal and shell
* VPN / proxy status (if detectable)

Installation (AUR):
yay -S netinfo

Usage:
netinfo

No flags or options are required. It always prints a full, structured report.

Source code and documentation:

AUR page:
[https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/netinfo](https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/netinfo)

This is a personal project and still evolving. Feedback, suggestions, or code reviews are very welcome.

Thanks for your time.

Lots of times mine is incorrect, sometimes even showing I am located hundreds of miles from my actual location.

I assume this problem is local though and in a lot if places this data usually is accurate.

Re: netinfo – minimal CLI tool to show verifiable network info

Thanks for sharing your experience.
Yes, that's exactly one of the reasons why netinfo avoids showing IP-based geolocation. In some regions it can be reasonably accurate, but in others it may point to a completely different city or even another region, depending on ISP routing and database accuracy.
Since netinfo aims to provide predictable and verifiable output, I chose to focus only on data that can be directly observed or confirmed from the system or network itself.
That said, I understand geolocation can still be useful in certain contexts, so I may consider adding it in the future as an optional feature with clear indication that it is approximate.
I appreciate your feedback.
