i know this is very outdated package but i really need to get it to work. unfortunatly i dont know where to start as i really dont know how to compile under arch linux (well i know how to compile but i dont know if i have all the necisary files to compile).
so is there a ftape package or what commands would i need to used to get a complete arch linux distro capable of compiling.

Woha this program is ancient. The latest version I found on the (homepage is for linux kernel 2.0.. module handling was so different back then (pre 2.4), I don't think you can get it to run with a current kernel without re-writing alot of code. (just my estimation, maybe it's not hard if you know what you're doing
)

i know its old but i also have problems with compiling any software, not just ftape, and i know ftape works on 2.4 since it works with slackware debian and redhat. but im wondering if there is any other app for tape backup on an old floppy tape device.

http://www.archlinux.org/packages/4299/ this seems to be a driver for tape drives.. and if you search for "tape" on http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php, it looks like there are at least two front-ends.
Also, if you have a working debian package for ftape, you could try to convert it to tar.gz with this program
