[solved]High temps, locked EC logic

Hello Again,

Following up on my previous thread where I resolved a "zombie" hibernation state on this HP 247 G8 https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=312091 , I am now tackling the thermal logic, from my DSDT I identified the logic where the BIOS holds the fan at a near-passive state until 70°C. I am currently using acpi_osi="Windows 2015" and iommu=pt to maintain system stability, but the "late-onset" fan curve is still causing uncomfortable chassis heat.

I’ve attempted to use nbfc-linux to implement a custom curve, but it’s a dead end:

  • Writing to EC registers (219/224) triggers a 90D Thermal Panic shutdown.

  • Even with 143 1 (Manual Mode) set, the EC watchdog trips immediately upon register manipulation.

The Goal I want to achieve
honestly idc about noise or smtg I just want it to be in low temps even if it spins maximum or at least I can control the behavior manually, over all I just want low temps and I tried tlp. power-profile daemon, auto-cpufreq ntg changed the temp behavior, I thought manually overriding fan curve can solve it....
yeah as I said manual overriding backfired so any way to spoof? like BIOS thinks im in 75 and fans kick in? or any kernel params to do? smtg like that?

additional info
-Linux 6.18.8-arch2-1
-The DSDT: https://gist.github.com/5hridhyan/03833 … 6b6647e933

so any ideas? how to do it?

edit:
yeah pretty safely at least not end bricking it smile

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

You're not allowed to leave until you're seen samurai champloo and reported how that you liked it.

Feb 08 08:08:59 Aranya-Marjara kernel: DMI: Hewlett-Packard HP 247 G8 Notebook PC/85E0, BIOS F.68 11/09/2022

And I assume there're no fan control settings in the UEFI either?
The DSDT is stock or your edit?

Is the heat coming from the GPU or the CPU? Is it justified? (Ie is the system actually under load - I'm running desktop/office stuff at 28°C on battery and 32°C on AC…)
Can you manually control the fans using https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fan_sp … m-sensors) - ie. just have a OS level daemon monitor the temp and control the fans according)

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

Thanks for your reply Seth!

sure I'll definitely watch and report back, and even after that I now have no plans to leave.

To answer your questions:

  • UEFI: It has a "Fan Always On" toggle, but it’s useless. It doesn't actually change the fan floor or the trigger points; the fan still sits idle until the SoC hits the 70°C mark defined in the DSDT.

  • DSDT: This is the stock DSDT. I haven't attempted a custom override yet

  • Load/Heat: The heat feels unjustified. I'm hitting 56°C+ just watching YT/ ani-cli or website/taking notes. Interestingly, temps spike to 62°C+ specifically when the battery drops below 20%, which makes me suspect some weird power-management interaction or voltage sag compensation triggering heat.

The EC/BIOS Logic: I suspect the BIOS trusts the fan RPM feedback more than the thermal sensors. When I tried nbfc-linux to force a higher RPM, the EC likely saw a mismatch between the expected "silent" state and the actual high RPM, panicked, and triggered the 90D Thermal Shutdown. It’s essentially a hardware-level watchdog that kills the system if you touch the registers.

Also

  • PWM: pwmconfig confirms no PWM-capable modules are exposed. The OS has zero direct visibility into the fan.

  • Platform Profile: /sys/firmware/acpi/platform_profile doesn't exist on this hardware, so I can't even use standard kernel-level thermal shifts.

  • Clock Speeds: CPU scales between 1.1GHz and 2.1GHz, but never drops to the 500-600MHz range I see reported for similar mobile Ryzens. tlp and auto-cpufreq haven't been able to force it lower.[/

$grep -H . /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/type
grep -H . /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/trip_point_*_temp
/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/type:acpitz
/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone1/type:acpitz
/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_0_temp:125000
/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_1_temp:104000
/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_2_temp:104000
/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_3_temp:70000

sad

it started after I fixed hibernation issue so I suspected it first but no, likely I got a "momentum"

└─$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=c0ae4a73-5088-4f7e-b497-ca1a4baa4dbe rw rootflags=subvol=@ cryptdevice=UUID=63984f23-816d-48d8-9493-119bf15c9a26:root zswap.enabled=0 rootfstype=btrfs loglevel=3 amdgpu.dpm=1 lsm=landlock,lockdown,yama,apparmor,bpf apparmor=1 security=apparmor iommu=pt amdgpu.noretry=0 pcie_aspm=off amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 amdgpu.dcfeaturemask=0x8 "acpi_osi=Windows 2015" resume=UUID=c0ae4a73-5088-4f7e-b497-ca1a4baa4dbe resume_offset=17423426

if any one param is also slightly changed or removed, boom! TLB flush errors + hibernation fails the same zombie behavior and also sometime I have to hope even REISUB to work also sometimes it doesn't work have to force shutdown no choice sad

-and speaker/audio glitches like even the sound number change to 100 but sound is like 20 or 15, yes I was facing that before but usually when I restart services it would usually fix it but now if that happens as I restarted; no audio output at all, likely in a weird state after each boot, which also the same time GPU or Hyprland kinda weird it either hangs or laggy behavior, waybar completely froze even tried to restart that but no, frame drops at either one need to restart whole laptop, yeah sorry I might be stacking up every issue's in one thread... but this is what I'm facing sad

edit:
I really tried to reduce boost of it "amd_pstate=active" it doesn't apply at all
tried cpupower
also limiting max freq,
I just want my palms to be cool no matter noise or smtg....
my usage:
- I don't play any game except that chrome dinosaur when power cut
-YT @ 480p or @720p
-website for notes and all
-VScode
-smooth hyprland experience
that's it and ntg else.....

and I expect a reliable behavior not every time fearing "oh no low battery, CHARGER!!" or "Ahh my palm feels hot" or "tomorrow I have exam please audio just work this time"
sad
idk what to do, I think my laptop is hostile and my laptop thinks I'm hostile

edit2:
Quick update: Ran memtest86+ (2 passes, 0 errors), so the RAM is physically fine. I think the TLB flush errors are purely logic/firmware-based, although as long as I have those params I don't face that.....

The heat feels unjustified. I'm hitting 56°C+ just watching YT/ ani-cli or website/taking notes.

Check top & powertop for what's consuming the most CPU and likewise amdgpu_top
Also make sure you're not somehow running software GL ("glxinfo -B" and your xorg log if this is X11) and "vainfo" and "mpv -v" to see whether you're decoding in HW

If the fans are BIOS controlled (and since you mentioned), do they behave any different on Ubuntu/Windows??

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

do they behave any different on Ubuntu/Windows??

I'll try to explain, in Arch or Ubuntu if the temp hits 65 or 70 I hear a certain RPM of fans and the same or similar RPM sound of fans hit in windows and task manager shows 47 or 48 so I cannot comment or clarify about temp behavior or fan behavior, I feel windows is not trustworthy for any data likely shows OEM/vendor calculated logic/data/numbers like when I first bought this laptop it literally showed "255 G8" instead of "247 G8", it's either fans ramp up at 45 like that or it is showing fake temperature, as much I observed before jumping back to arch....

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

GL and vaapi seem fine, make sure it's not the wayland compositor, test the temperature/load situation on X11/openbox
Another thing I forgot: what's the battery discharge rate / watts?
If the system is heating up on 3W there's more likely some problem w/ the overall heat management (D.U.S.T.?)

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

5.1W should™ not be able to heat up the system… any chance there's an issue w/ the heat-pipe (or the system being clogged up in gunk and dust)?

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

Yeah I tried openbox but unfortunately it didn;t launch at all... had to REISUB again and after booting WIFI 5Ghz completely stopped showing sad
it's like try to fix one get two breakage for free....
and yeah you are right maybe dust colgged; so I have to take to a technician and clean + re-apply thermal paste likely....
this system has very unstable in behavior  hmm

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

Test some live distro for temperature behavior and stability, but if the discharge rate isn't misreported or you were looking at an isolated irrelevant value at no load (but playing a video ramps it up to 20W) the system should not be able to heat up.
Something that's contradicting the dust theory however is that the case gets hot to the touch - that means the heat does rise to the surface.

didn;t launch at all... had to REISUB

Do you have an xorg log from that attempt?

yes keyboard and the little space left for "palm rest" does feel hot

Regarding the 7W draw, that was actually while playing YouTube  in the background. It stays consistently low, which is why the physical heat on the palm rest is so confusing. It seems like the heat isn't coming from the CPU 'working hard,' but maybe from a specific component (like the bridge) that isn't being reported in the discharge rate properly.

I'll try a Live Distro as suggested to see if the thermal behavior persists there, which would isolate this to pure hardware/firmware.

edit2:
sorry it was issue with sddm, logged in with

startx /usr/bin/openbox-session

and I saw black screen I started clicking randomly and I bymistakely right clicked I saw options \o/ opened terminal and saw the battery discharge rate, it was same first launched terminal then ran powertop shows 4.68 and I moved the cursor a bit and it's back to 5.11 W and never gone down, so X11 or Wayland similar battery discharge rate...

Edit3:
Tested Live ISO, when booted temps was 59 and YT/Browsing was about fluctuated b/w 57°C and 72°C, and when I booted back to Arch I saw temps 44°C! idle and YT tested it gone 55°C or 58°C and upon closing it did go down back to 46°C!! I thought "BOOYAH!!" but no hibernation broke, and this time even REISUB did not work insert crying emoji

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

So… the xorg log looks completely unsuspicous and obviously we figured why openbox "didn't work" (cause ain't a fancy DE wink )
Booting from another device might have changed sth. in the ACPI (though I assume there's no windows around, but still might be related to sleep/hibernation?)

How has the temperature development (sensors and your paws) since then?

Yes it droped, and now with YT playing(without plugged in) goes b/w 45 to 52, and my palms paws feel normal... so if unpredictability had a face:
https://support.hp.com/lv-en/document/i … 4471100-16
so the temps were just a distraction the system/hardware is fine unless it decides to, at least if REISUB worked,  I wouldn't be concerned this much I would have marked the thread as solved by "Live USB;re-initialize;drops temps"
temps did dropped but now the fear "oh low battery"
but I think because of those params at least no TLB flush errors, even if Hibernation didn't work...
Yes No windows ntg, only Arch now...
https://0x0.st/Pa4E.txt
https://0x0.st/Pa4g.txt
Hibernation fails it doesn't even start and no TLB flush errors the bad news is it's not consistent...

Edit:
Yeah I think I'm being a help vampire I'm really sorry
the thing is automatic hibernation doesn't work, it's maybe because of race conditions etc, and importantly Seth at least it's not worth your time to figure out and how to fix it for this unpredictable Hardware/system...
and since my original issue was about High temps and Ec logic I think I got low temps and understood a user cannot win against EC/fimrware, hence Marking the Thread as SOLVED...
I'll plug in before low battery and if I failed to plug in then... I'll accept the consequences as a karma
Thanks @seth for your reply, time and guidance, I appreciate your patience ^^
signing off to watch and complete those huge anime list, and  I promise I'll report back about samurai champloo that I liked it smile

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

Oh! yeah, now I've updated /etc/systemd/sleep.conf with HibernateMemoryPressureLimit=50% and HibernateMode=platform shutdown to ensure the kernel can reclaim enough pages before creating the image, I also discovered a legacy Ubuntu swap signature was still present in the swapfile header which I remember I nuked it and even re-wrote with dd! anyways I've now cleared with a fresh mkswap. Currently testing with the corrected Btrfs offset (17423426) and the new memory limits, I'll report back

Edit:

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

udev rules was a dumb idea but yeah with similar logic, the hibernation worked, but TLB flush errors even though I have those params and in fact added extra to be safe and sure

└─$ cat /etc/systemd/system/systemd-hibernate.service.d/pre-hibernate.conf
[Service]
ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/bash -c "sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches"

but idk how to tackle the TLB flush errors...
is fatal? if not

and those params don't seem to help I'll remove them....

Does "iommu=soft" help?

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

\o/
https://0x0.st/PahF.txt
The iommu=pt was a leftover from an earlier attempt to fix it...
switched to iommu=soft as suggested, and combined with amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1, the TLB flush errors have completely disappeared from my resume logs. Hibernation is now working perfectly on this Picasso/RV2 APU.
Thanks @seth smile  I'll re-test hibernation for while and then I'll report back if it completely fixed it..

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

See whether instead "amd_iommu=fullflush" works (or you don't need any special iommu setting at all)

https://0x0.st/PBXg.txt
hmm
will test without any iommu settings and report back.

Edit:
https://0x0.st/PBXF.txt
LoL without any iommu settings now it works, and in the fp I started adding iommu setting because of that! and now it doesn't errors!? I think I got lucky this time...

The original issue might have been fixed w/ a BIOS or kernel update or was always just the underdimensioned hibernation space smile

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

yeah, I was gone insane like who reads DSDT just because their PC misbehaves at low battery!? lol (and before I was reading docs on internet to understand it!)
I need to learn how to isolate symptoms from causes, and need to look at one solution per problem...
in fact I never actually noticed the Error -12, I went "oh ubuntu image!?" "EC is unfair" "my laptop is hostile!!" yeah that was on me and from previous thread, in this thread(journey) I enabled Zswap and those "pre-hibernate.conf" and all, and tried `soft` and then normal (no iommu settings) so that's the change I guess I did for hibernation to fix and now hibernation also works and no TLB flush errors...
Thanks once again, and without your guidance I would have ended up making it worse, Thanks for saving me from a rabbit hole ^^

Much fun with Mugen, Jin and Fuu

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

https://0x0.st/PBhg.txt
I tried hibernation again, it worked but TLB Flush again, I started striping out each params and even tried all again like `soft` `pt` etc  ntg worked..., so still the same  TLB flush and the log I uploaded now Is completely "bare bones" like no params, seth can you please help me to solve this race condition...
and after the last post of mine in this thread I hibernated again and it failed same ERROR -12 so the only change then I did is this

┌──(shridhyan@Aranya-Marjara)-[~]
└─$ cat /usr/local/bin/mem_slayer.sh
#!/bin/bash
sync
echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
KILL_APPS=("firefox" "brave" "tor-browser" "zen" "code")
for app in "${KILL_APPS[@]}"; do
    pkill -9 -f "$app"
done
echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/compact_memory
sync
┌──(shridhyan@Aranya-Marjara)-[~]
└─$ cat /etc/systemd/system/systemd-hibernate.service.d/pre-hibernate.conf
[Service]
ExecStartPre=/usr/local/bin/mem_slayer.sh

so yeah hibernation works no doubt but TLB flush errors hmm
Edit:
if this helps whenever TLB flush errors happens I see "lag" for noticeable microseconds, like using keyboard shortcuts to force kill apps, or moving workspaces with geastures(touchpad) frame drops
After each hibernation that triggers TLB flush errors, I need to reboot to restore smooth performance, otherwise, everything runs fine.

Re: [solved]High temps, locked EC logic

No

└─$ cat /sys/module/amdgpu/parameters/runpm
-1

I think it was not available from the start... or from I switched to linux....

https://lkml.org/lkml/2026/1/27/727
hmm

yes technically I could just plug in and move on/wait for fix, the worst part is

[ 3533.102818] ACPI: battery: [Firmware Bug]: (dis)charge rate invalid.

I have to be ready with plugged in before it reaches 15 or 11% or else hibernation => TLB FLUSH ERRORS and all sad
