What's the story with this libgcc package?

When upgrading the system a few days ago a new package was installed libgcc which contains the same things as gcc-libs. The problem is that gcc and gcc-libs are necessary for upgrading/downgrading the nvidia driver. And with this libgcc replacing libraries, after updating the driver, the result is kernel panic.

1. How do I upgrade the driver to nvidia-open without kernel panic?
2. Does anyone know if I can get rid of libgcc and put gcc & gcc-libs back in their places, so I can install the open driver?

And why the hell nowhere in libgcc it wasn't mentioned that it conflicts with gcc-libs?  That's freaking irresponsible!

gcc-libs is now a metapackage, it shouldn't contain anything and is deprecated: https://archlinux.org/todo/gcc-libs-deprecation/

Are you performing partial updates?

Re: What's the story with this libgcc package?

I was because of performance problems with nvidia. But when I saw these problems have been fixed (finally), I ran a full system upgrade and this happened.

So, if I understand you correctly, if I update gcc-libs & lib32-gcc-libs to their latest versions, this wll break the conflict with libgcc and I'll be able to install nvidia-open without kernel panic?

Run a full system upgrade. If it doesn't work, post the *full* input and output of the upgrade command.

Re: What's the story with this libgcc package?

Whether it's a full system upgrade or just updating the gcc group, the result is always the same after the reboot: https://imgur.com/a/6uwzlk5 . And I can't give you output bc once that upgrade is done EVERYTHING stops working, including the terminal itself.
So, a big "thank you" to whomever decided to fix things that worked just fine! icon_evil.gif

I'm staying with nvidia 580, f*ck the stupid DX12 patches, they're not worth the trouble! icon_evil.gificon_evil.gif
