After mesa update to 26.0.1 vulkan crashes X server

After update mesa and others:

upgraded mesa (1:25.3.5-1 -> 1:26.0.1-1)
upgraded lib32-mesa (1:25.3.5-1 -> 1:26.0.1-1)
upgraded opencl-mesa (1:25.3.5-1 -> 1:26.0.1-1)
upgraded vulkan-mesa-implicit-layers (1:25.3.5-1 -> 1:26.0.1-1)
upgraded vulkan-nouveau (1:25.3.5-1 -> 1:26.0.1-1)

when I run anything vulkan related: vkgears, mpv (which now defaults to vulkan playback) X org server crashes (Xorg log):

Re: After mesa update to 26.0.1 vulkan crashes X server

nvidia_drm.modeset=1

You're deliberately using nouveau instead of https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-580xx-dkms/ ?

Linux home 6.12.74-1-lts

Do you run into the same w/ the main kernel?

Re: After mesa update to 26.0.1 vulkan crashes X server

'nvidia_drm.modeset=1' is already set

I know, I pointed that out because you're *not* using the nvidia driver.

pacman -Qs 'kernel|nvidia'

You correctly guessed my video card, how did you do that?

Hopefully stealing my script wink

Re: After mesa update to 26.0.1 vulkan crashes X server

Well it was a major mesa update, so very likely in that general direction.

Do you get a better non xorg log stack trace from a potential coredump? https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Core_d … _core_dump

No, do you intentionally not use https://aur.archlinux.org/packages?O=0&K=580xx ?
Edit: "no" also because it's default anyway.

Re: After mesa update to 26.0.1 vulkan crashes X server

Without 'nvidia_drm.modeset=1' simpledrm is initialized?':

Ah, the hack is actually still provided w/ the 6.12 LTS kernel.
nb. it'll cease to work when 6.18 becomes the LTS kernel.
Try to add "initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters instead if you require the simpledrm device to be blocked.

I have disabled coredump save:

Well… reactivate it?
Or run "gdb vkgears", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Debugg … _the_trace

GDB when X server crashed would end gdb run in terminal too?
I can save dump and it's 19MB elf file. Do you want/need it?

Re: After mesa update to 26.0.1 vulkan crashes X server

vkgears aborts (we knew that), there's gonna be an error message but the backtrace doesn't reveal much.
There's a chance this is just because you're losing contact to the X11 server, you could run

DISPLAY=:0 vkgears

from a console (ctrl+alt+f3) to get the abort message.

Postulating the above what looks to be a stack corruption in the Xorg process is the critical bit.

GDB when X server crashed would end gdb run in terminal too?

The terminal process would die and that the shell and gdb inside with it, yes.

Do you run into similar problems w/ "random wayland compositor"™ (weston should do)?
There might be a binary incompatibility between modesetting/glamor and gallium/nouveau

Re: After mesa update to 26.0.1 vulkan crashes X server

'DISPLAY=:0 vkgears' run - was displaying steady number of 60 FPS, unlike glxgears which display nothing.

As I wrote earlier in #4 post, sway didn't crash. I don't have other Wayland compositor. BTW do you know why sway makes my CPU hotter when playing video by mpv then i3wm? It is 7-10 ℃ hotter.

Yes, I avoid AUR and nvidia binary drivers at all. And what kernel versions these drivers support?

Check mpv -v for the used decoder and video output but probably vaapi doesn't work.
Also painting a frame in a  GL accelerated compositor implies overhead over (uncomposited) X11 - that's probably esp. true for nouveau.

'DISPLAY=:0 vkgears' run - was displaying steady number of 60 FPS

But it doesn't crash/abort?

Attach gdb to the Xorg process (from another console) and hope to get a more reasonable backtrace this way.

Re: After mesa update to 26.0.1 vulkan crashes X server

"initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init" added to kernel boot parameters and looks like it works well.
"DISPLAY=:0 vkgears" doesn't crash/abort.
I tried to attach gdb to the Xorg process by --pid= option from 2nd console (ctrl+alt+f2, X server started on f1), but display freeze (I switched to f1 and back to f2, but display image stayed from f2, cursor stop blinking and disappear). I had to do sysrq reisub to reboot (actually done reis and regain control, login and reboot because system might be in unstable state). Maybe I did it wrong and had to differently attach gdb?

The moment you attack gdb it'll stop the process, enter "continue" to, well…, continue execution wink
