The kernel parameters I have set

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet splash nvidia-drm.modeset=1"

I did search the wiki and found that I might need to add

initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init

But it resulted in me not being able to boot into the system at all. I get stuck at loading the kernel.

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

Use the LTS kernel and monitor the AUR for nvidia-390xx-dkms updates, the older nvidia drivers need downstream patches for 6.19 - there're already some threads about this.

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

The same error is raised even though I am using 6.18.16-1-lts kernel.

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

lsmod | grep nvidia

initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init

will actually block the simpledrm device (to some extent) unlike "nvidia-drm.modeset=1 module_blacklist=simpledrm" (you can omit both)

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

nvidia_drm 65536 1
nvidia_uvm 2072576 0
nvidia_modeset 1343488 3 nvidia_drm
nvidia 19787776 84 nvidia_uvm,nvidia_modeset
video 81920 1 nvidia
ipmi_msghandler 98304 2 ipmi_devintf,nvidia

I omitted "nvidia-drm.modeset=1 module_blacklist=simpledrm" but using initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init makes it impossible for me to boot into the system as i stated before. I get stuck at loading the kernel.

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

Can you boot the multi-user.target this way (2nd link below) and post the complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

(try to reboot by frenetically pressing ctrl+alt+del or using the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) )

Also rather restore "nvidia-drm.modeset=1" - nvidia_modeset was loaded there but while the parameter will no longer block the simpledrm device, I don't see a modprobe config in the aur package that would set it and am pretty sure that it wasn't the default w/ the 390xx drivers (no idea whether nvidia changed that at any point)

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

No matter what I tried, I could not boot in with initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init leading me to try just nvidia-drm.modeset=1.

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

was not working for me.
So I went ahead with

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

Mar 08 15:31:13 archlinux (udev-worker)[439]: nvidia: Process '/usr/bin/bash -c '/usr/bin/mknod -Z -m 666 /dev/nvidiactl c $(grep nvidia-frontend /proc/devices | cut -d \ -f 1) 255'' failed with exit code 1.
Mar 08 15:31:13 archlinux (udev-worker)[439]: nvidia: Process '/usr/bin/bash -c 'for i in $(cat /proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/*/information | grep Minor | cut -d \ -f 4); do /usr/bin/mknod -Z -m 666 /dev/nvidia${i} c $(grep nvidia-frontend /proc/devices | cut -d \ -f 1) ${i}; done'' failed with exit code 1.

but that is usually not fatal at all.

No matter what I tried, I could not boot in with initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init

Ok, but can you *re*boot from there w/ ctrl+alt+del or sysrq+REISUB (see the link in #6 for details)
Because then you can "sudo journalctl -b -1" to access the journal of that (previous) boot

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

There's no indication of any problems/error in that.
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvid … nt-1062315
I assume you've updated the AUR package (not just rebuilt the module) within the last 24h?

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

Yeah I have updated it. Even tried a whole reinstall of the os 'cause I thought I broke something.

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

'key - since the system clearly boots when blocking the simpledrm device, can you blindly or automatically start some X11 session (startx, I assume) and post that xorg log?
How do you usually start X11 anyway?
startx or xinit (there's a difference)?
Does "needs_root_rights = yes" in /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config allow you to start X11?

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

I use startx as I'm not familiar or aware of the xinit method. Setting needs_root_rights = yes does not seem to work.

Is it some configuration issue as right now I am trying with bare minimal setup? Just have "exec dwm" in my xinitrc.

Last link below, but I'm not sure that this will be relevant here.

Have you attempted to

blocking the simpledrm device, can you blindly or automatically start some X11 session (startx, I assume) and post that xorg log?

The nvidia 390xx drivers don't have fbdev support and can also not take over from the simpledrm device, so you want that to go away.
Even if the console/framebuffer output then doesn't work it would be interesting whether it will allow you to start the X11 server.

What was the last working kernel generation? 6.12 or 6.18?

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

Actually I did fix my xinitrc through that way back but I was not using it because I thought I had some config issues.

Sorry but I do not know how I am supposed to block the simpledrm device.
The last one which worked  was a 6.18 lts kernel. I am currently using 6.18.16-1-lts but it does not seem to work.

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

Sorry but I do not know how I am supposed to block the simpledrm device.

"initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init" (Yes, I know that this results in you not being able to see anything, but the system does boot and you can operate it blindly, automatically or via ssh)

https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … mmits/main
6.18.16-1-lts is the first and only 6.18 - if you've been using the lts kernel before you were on 6.12 and the "nvidia-drm.modeset=1" hack to kill the simpledrm device with fire would still have been in place.

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

Ohh I tried doing it blindly and startx worked flawlessly.
The tty where I was supposed to enter my username and password was not visible so as you suggested I did it blindly. It worked.

So is there a way to like fix the tty not being  visible? Is it somehow related to the fact that I have a legacy system?
Thank you for you help.

Re: [SOLVED] Xserver error

So it's the simplydumb device, what a shocking surprise…

Do you use grub?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GRUB/T … ramebuffer

Otherwise you could try to dump and inject the edid, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … s_and_EDID
