Add Windows XP pro computer to Arch Linux domain

Hello,
I am new to Arch Linux. I am just thrown into a situation where we have a Linux Arch server (dont know what version, but seems atleast 3yrs old) and Windows XP pro computers on our network. I need to add a new windows xp pro computer to the network. Iam familiar with windows network and if I had to add a pc to network in windows, I would go in System Properties >  Computer Name > Change >Click in Domain and type the domain name and click ok then I would get a prompt to type in the admin username and password to join the domain.

I have performed the same steps as mentioned above to join a pc to the Arch Linux server, but upon providing the username as "root" and the password for username/password to join the domain I get an "username or bad password" error . I know I am typing in the right password and to verify it I have logged onto the physical box at the prompt with username as root and the password and it was logged in successfully.

Is there anything different that i need to do to accomplish the task? Can someone please provide the steps on how to add this pc to the Arch Linux server. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Add Windows XP pro computer to Arch Linux domain

I'm not a 100% sure about what you want to do, however, if what you want to do is allow users in your domain to access that machine over the network you need to consider a few things:
1. what type of access will they have? (SSH, SBM, file server, etc.)
2. if there are several users you may want to consider limiting the use of HDD space per user in that machine (unless space is not a problem).

Now, say you wish to give the uses access using their windows file manager (to map that network driver), so they can add that server to their  log in access. You would have to set up Samba, create accounts for those users in that Linux box and then they will be able to access it.

There are ways to automate this process (say you have hundreds of uses to be added to the server) using LDAP for instance but at this point in time you may just try adding one user and do some testing.

Hope this helps.

Re: Add Windows XP pro computer to Arch Linux domain

Thanks for your reply. But let me try to explain it again.
Our Network has one Arch linux Server with 15 windows XP professional computers.
All computers are connected to the server and accessing network drives, files, folders and applications without any problem.
We have purchased a new computer with Windows XP pro.(os) and would like to add it to the network so that this computer can access network drives, files, folders applications and printers on the network.
How can i add this new computer to the linux server domain?.
Let me know if I can provide further explaination.

Re: Add Windows XP pro computer to Arch Linux domain

The principle outlined before still applies.
Whomever is the user of that WinXP machine has to be added to the Arch box as a user. Thereafter he/she will be able to log in into that machine by mapping whatever public folders you have in the Linux box or his/her own "/home/userid" in the Linux box into the XP workstation.

To keep things simple, if you so wish, use the same password in both the WinXP and the Linux box so the user types one user id/password to access both.
In your case (because the network is very small) it should not be a problem.

Hope this helps.
