refind-0.14.2-2 issues

I have seen that there was apparently an issue in refind-0.14.2-2: https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … -/issues/4

I use refind but haven't upgraded yet. It seems to prevent refind from finding loaders on ext4 partitions (and take significant additional time while scanning too). Does anyone use refind here and can give more info?

I have found refind to take a pretty long time to start on my machine (since I installed it, so nothing new here), and versions 0.14.x were also detecting tool duplicates (which I suspect was making it even longer to start). Is this duplicates issue solved in 0.14.2?

Thanks to all users of refind!

Re: refind-0.14.2-2 issues

Looking at issues on Sourceforge (which hosts refind), seems there are more issues yet regarding refind 0.14.2, so I suggest anyone using refind not to upgrade for now.
Not many users apparently.

refind was looking promising back when I installed it, but development seems to have come to an almost halt for the past 2 years, so, I don't know what's the future. Not too keen to switch back to grub and even less so to use systemd-boot, so... yeah. If anyone has suggestions for alternatives.

Re: refind-0.14.2-2 issues

I've used Refind from around 2017 (got my first uefi system then) and have not had problems with it.

I can't say if ext4 loading fails now as the systems I own or help admin have switched to lvm/luks encryption.
/boot is an unencrypted fat partition so refind doesn't need to load from ext4 anymore

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: refind-0.14.2-2 issues

I have had the same problem today. It could not find the bootloaders (neither Arch Linux on ext4 /boot nor Windows on the same ESP where refind is) or just showed dark screen. Downgrading solved the problem.

Re: refind-0.14.2-2 issues

Same issue here - Refind 14..2-2 can't find my Arch install, but could still see the Windows drive.

Weirdly enough, my Arch kernel *is* on a FAT32 esp, 500MB partition (/dev/nvme0n1p1, mounted at /boot/efi). FWIW, Windows bootmgr on the MS reserved partition is at /dev/nvme1n1p1.

Surprising this showstopper hasn't been encountered / reported by more folks.

As above, downgrading to 14.2-1 is a workaround.

EDIT: here's a link to the upstream Soundforge discussion, for those wishing to follow along at home.

Maybe I am saying an obvious thing but you can also use UKI which can be booted by EFI directly.

My use cases for a bootloader:

I have no BIOS access at work and I cannot disable secure boot or enroll my own keys. Refind with shim is the simplest option I know of.

My own computer where I dual boot with Windows.

Otherwise if you do not need to dual boot and you can control secure boot UKI works great.
