Severe Crash with firefox

whenever opening firefox i get a full system lockup, no mouse no keyboard a full hang with no recovery. this was when i did pacman -S firefox and got 2.0, now i deleted it with pacman -R firefox, and installed the version 1.5 from the cd and it worked once and then after reboot same thing, and this is getting annoying, and i cant tell what is causing a full system crash.

any ideas, (im going to try swiftfox and if iit happens again maybe go back to dillo)

Re: Severe Crash with firefox

Try deleting or moving ~/.mozilla. Maybe it was a plugin or a bad preferences.

Re: Severe Crash with firefox

well it seems it was something else since even seamonkey does the same, it will run for a second or two and then hard crash with no recovery except powering off (which i dont like to do) dillo seams to be the only reliable one.

Re: Severe Crash with firefox

Does anyone know what the problem here is? I'm encountering the same thing. -safe-mode doesn't help (after you press the continue in safe mode button, the safe mode dialog closes and then everything freezes). There are no error messages. This has only been happening for the last couple of weeks, and I have no idea what could be causing it. I've reverted every change that I can think of (all I can remember doing is installing ogle and adding this user to audio and video). I've uninstalled flashplugin, despite the freezes coming long before it has to deal with flash, to no avail.

Usually, it doesn't happen the first time I run firefox (sometimes it does, though). I'd love to test it more, but hard rebooting gets kind of annoying after a while.

Oh, I just realized that I also added alsa-utils. I'll try removing that, though I kind of doubt that it's the culprit.

Edit: Well, maybe it was the culprit. I removed alsa-utils, alsa-oss (I don't even remember installing this), and alsa-lib, and I can at least open and close firefox repeatedly without freezing, which is more than I could do half an hour ago. I'm already late, so I can't test this further right now, but later today I'll try to figure out which of these was causing the problem (if any).

Re: Severe Crash with firefox

Finally got around to testing things at least a little. Looks like alsa-utils is the culprit. Install it, and running firefox freezes my system. Remove it (and just it), and everything's fine. Anyone have any ideas about why this might be? (Edit: Also, if there isn't a fix, as a workaround, is there a way to unmute and adjust volume without installing alsa-utils?)

Re: Severe Crash with firefox

Just thought I'd add that installing qiv also made firefox freeze my system. (I think that it was when it was trying to load an image, but I was too tired of rebooting to test.)

ralvez: Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't have room for all of the stuff I'd need to install it. (At least, I think that I don't. I have about 60MB free in / -  I'm running off of a 1GB dom - and I'm using ratpoison as my wm right now, so I think that installing any kde apps is out of the question for me.)

I'm thinking that I might just reinstall and run everything as root, since I don't have any of these problems on my laptop (where I forgot to set up a user before I started installing stuff and have been too lazy to change anything). But that sounds like a pretty horrible workaround.
