Ethernet device not detected

Hey all!

I'm unable to use ethernet on my laptop, as it's not detected through lspci/lsusb. I'm using NetworkManager with iwd backend on an Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 G533ZW. Here are things I've tried so far:

- Check nmcli (No ethernet device shown)
- Check ip link (No ethernet device shown)
- Check lspci | grep -i ethernet (Nothing returned)
- Install r8125-dkms, modprobe, and restart nm
- Install linux-zen
- Install asusctl and enable asusd
- Add pci=realloc acpi_osi=! acpi_osi=\"Windows 2020\" to grub config
- Disable armoury crate control interface support in BIOS
- Update BIOS
- Boot into a live fedora environment (Ethernet still doesn't work)

As far as I can tell, no damage has been done to the ethernet port. Asus says my laptop supports ethernet with the provided rj45 port, and I have a cat 8 cable plugged in. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Ethernet device not detected

if lspci nor lsusb show anything you can stop all attempts at fixing this at the OS level.  Check your BIOS/UEFI whether there's a setting that hard disables the card. Alternatively if there are errors in enumerating the device it might show up in the journal in which case you should post

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' https://0x0.st

the result you get from this (assuming you at least have working internet via wlan)

Re: Ethernet device not detected

lspci -knn
lsusb

Please no grepping, there's absolutely no guarantee your vendor would show "ethernet" anywhere

lspci -knnd ::02xx

is more likely to provide meaningful (limited), output but we'll look at all of it.

Edit:

Otherwise see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Tethering

Asus BIOS settings are very limited. All I could find was "armoury crate control interface support" which I disabled.

0x0.st seems to be down due to AI spam. Is there somewhere else I could upload logs to?

wlan0 works, it's just ethernet that doesn't.

According to this website (which shows a different ram/storage configuration of the same model laptop) I should have a Realtek RTL8125 ethernet controller, which doesn't show up. Maybe this is a red herring?

Re: Ethernet device not detected

sudo journalctl -b | nc termbin.com 9999

There's no RTL8125 chip nor anything else resembling a wired NIC nor an unaccounted device hmm
Does it show up/can you configure it in the UEFI settings?

Re: Ethernet device not detected

Here's my termbin link:
https://termbin.com/9orn

For whatever reason, Asus doesn't give much control in the UEFI menu. All I could find was a setting called "armoury crate control interface support" which I disabled, and "Network stack" which I enabled. Neither of them seemed to make any difference.

"rd.driver.pre=vfio-pci … pci=realloc acpi_osi=! "acpi_osi=Windows 2020" intel_iommu=off" are already mitigational efforts?
Please remove those and post an updated "clean" boot.

* Do your UEFI settings allow you to toggle ReBAR?

As far as I can tell, yes. It's the latest bios version listed on their website.

I removed these and the same messages still show. Here's the logs:

Not as far as I can tell. There's not much I can do in UEFI.

The port on my laptop doesn't have a light, but the port on the splitter it's plugged in to does, and it flashes, though I don't get any connection from it.

is there a parallel windows installation?
Any parallel OS? Does the NIC show up there? Does on a live boot of https://grml.org/ ?

In case there's a parallel windows see the 3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

Re: Ethernet device not detected

I don't have any other OSes installed. No other live medium sees my ethernet port. I assume something's just wrong with the port. I've gone ahead and gotten an ethernet to usb c adapter, which works perfectly. Thank you for the help you've given me, even if I wasn't able to get my ethernet port to work.

Re: Ethernet device not detected

Can you remove some optional PCI device (eg. the GPU or one of the nvme's) - if you're removing the GPU, don't forget to re-attach your monitor to the IGP wink
Have you contacted asus about this?
