Like with Gentoo, would I have to install and configure xorg-x11 before I can install a better desktop environment like GNOME, KDE, or XFCE?

Installing xorg manually before would be recommended but not necessary. Configuring xorg is as simple as installing the tool "hwd" and preparing a xorg.conf with it (hwd -x). Then you can look into it and change some things if you like. That's all. No compiling needed if you're talking bout that

Xorg is thingie that makes KDE and Gnome work. You need to install and configure it to run desktop environment

Yeah, I know what xorg is.
I am on gnome in my Arch installation now.
I asked in case I would have to boot into twm before I could get any window manager to work.
