[SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

Hi everyone, this is my first post ever and I am not particularly skilled in linux (also im not a native english speaker) so please be patient with me.
The problem is that Arch sudently freezes at moments, sometimes even gets stuck in some kind of "loop" as I notice while watching a video that the last second or less of audio were played in loop.
At first I thought it was Hyprland but I have tried some fixes and nothing seem to work and I noticed that I cannot switch to tty when the freezing happens,
I also tried stuff for arch like changing kernels, using lts zen, reinstalling packages looking for corrupted ones, all kinds of stuff but nothing seem to work.
I am truly at a loss, I am not well versed in the journalctl command so when I tried to read it I tried to fix the errors I found along the way but nothing.

I am mounting a i3-10105F, AMD 6600xt, 32GB ram. I am using all the latest kernels and I have updated and reinstalled all packages even AUR (using yay).
My DE is Hyprland latest version and I am using the HyDE script for personalization.
I have dual booting with Windows(mostly for gaming in games with kernel-based anti-cheats), and apparently windows when booted does not give me this problem.
Windows and arch are installed in separated ssds

I don't know how to post code so I don't know how to put the outputs of my machine in this post.

Any help is very much appreciated , thank you for your time smile

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

I don't know how to post code so I don't know how to put the outputs of my machine in this post.

1st link below

the last second or less of audio were played in loop

Kernel panic, probably by amdgpu… maybe it lights up before
Please post your complete system journal for the previous boot

sudo journalctl -b  -1 | curl -s -H "Accept: application/json, */*" --upload-file - 'https://paste.c-net.org/'

On a hunch also

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

You'll need https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/v4l-utils/
(There were some issues around VRR outputs)

Windows and arch are installed in separated ssds

The location is irrelevant, see the 3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

The system journal for the previous boot  here.

Did it crash while the monitor was locked? Might be DPMS, also (still disable VRR) disable locker and DPMS and see whether that stabilizes the situation - https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hyprland#Idle

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

I enabled it in my userprefs.conf so that I could use freesync. I have 3 monitors 2 on my desk and 1 on my bed. 2 of them have freesync so I enabled it by writing:

misc{
     vrr = 1
}

You think I have this problem because of freesync? if so then why I cannot use tty when the computer freezes...

For the screen I used DPMS but since I read it could give some problem with prolonged idle on hyprland I switched to wlopm some time ago, I have a script that switches them on and off for when I use the pc from the bed but I still experience this issue.

wlopm example:

wlopm --toggle DP-3

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

if so then why I cannot use tty when the computer freezes...

Because at this point the kernel (suspectedly the amdgpu module) has hit a wall already.
As mentioned, preferably (also) disable VRR in the monitors.

I have a script that switches them on and off

That's equivalent to DPMS, the plan is to see whether this ever happens if the output don't turn off at all.

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

Okey I guess I could try, but then this means that I cannot use freesync and I have also to keep all my screens on all the time? Is there any solution for this?

I should also mention that I had freesync active for more than a year without issues and this thing started not longer than a month ago.

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

At this point we're trying to figure *what* is causing those freezes. We'll deal w/ how to solve that afterwards.

started not longer than a month ago

Does that align w/ jumping from the 6.12 LTS kernel to the 6.18 one?

I actually don't know, before having this issue I only used standard linux kernel and updated it as soon as it came out.
I disabled vrr, and I will stop using the script (I keybinded them so I will just stop using them).

Tomorrow I will try to let the PC run all day long and see if it get stuck anyway( it happened to me already even if it wasnt under any amount of workload).

=> /var/log/pacman.log

The kernel is pretty much self-contained, if you've the LTS kernel (or a live distro) around you could downgrade the main kernel to the version before this started and see whether that fixes it.

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

So I left my pc up for more than 5h and it didn't gave me any issue, so it could be that one of those 2 things you suggested was the thing causing the freezing so thank you very much for your help. But now I have the problem of not being able to use vrr or wlopm/dpms, how can I fix that?

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

not being able to use vrr or wlopm/dpms, how can I fix that?

Re-enable DPMS (the more necessary one) and see whether the issue re-emerges.
Either way, re-enable VRR w/o DPMS and test the same (as a cross test to figure which one or whether it's both)

Re-enable DPMS (the more necessary one) and see whether the issue re-emerges.

The issue re-emerged after using wlopm again with vrr off.
What could I use instead of wlopm/ DPMS  to turn off my screens?
btw is there a way to diagnose stuff like these? I feel like some error should be outputted somewhere if the screens and keyboard suddently stopped working...

Does this also happen w/ not-hyprland, eg. start some X11 session (openbox or just an xterm will do) and

xset dpms force off

and thest the behavior on weston or sway as well.

I have only hyprland on wayland I dont have anyother DE, do you think I should install one (xterm like you said)?
I read that having multiple DEs and switching could cause instability so I settled for my favorite

Yes, we want to know whether it's DPMS itself or something hyprland does in that context that triggers the GPU module to choke.

I read that having multiple DEs and switching could cause instability

Here? As a general notion, this is nonsense - of course there can be isolated bugs w/ overlapping services but that's not a concern for running startx into a completely basic session w/ an xterm and some WM for sure.

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

xterm gives me error when run in tty, "DISPLAY not set". I read and followed the official guide of xterm,the arch wiki and searching the error I tried to create a xorg local server and connect to it but nothing. when I run it on hyprland tho everything is ok so I dont really know what to do...

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xinit
Running "startx" will do, the default config runs TWM and a couple ox xterms (one of them as session keeping process)

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

while I was doing my own stuff on hyprland without vrr and dpms/wlopm  the screen freezed.
At this point I dont know what to do...
I was planning to run the test you told me to do tonight while I was asleep but it's clear it can happen even without those 2.
Could be because 3 screens are too much?

Hardly.

See whether any of your journals has "flip_done timed out" and in doubt do not reboot w/ the power button but try to use the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) (you'll have to first explicitly enable that)

I looked at my journals and at the reference you sent me I haven't found anything like that.
For the reboot thing I think I will have to stick to shutdowns because I have a 65% keyboard without the SysRq key sad

Now I am trying updating some stuff I used to personalize hyprland and see if anything changes....

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

The sysrq key is the print key, you can try this w/o actually crashing.

Edit: on a hunch see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU … timed_out)

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

I tried everything including the kernel parameter stuff... nothing... I decided to reinstall arch completely and see if something changes...

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

I reinstalled Arch and now it freezes only if I dpms separate screens for long periods of time. If nothing else happens I will mark it solved and blame it on the kernel or something lol.

Thank you so munch for helping me smile

Re: [SOLVED] Arch freezes randomly without no particular error

I doubt re-installation would have particularly fixed anything and the condition seems intermittent anyway and ongoing.
The cause however is most likely between the amdgpu kernel module, firmware and your hardware.

What if you disable all power saving and also see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p2296243 ?

pcie.aspm=off amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0

"amdgpu.dpm=0" will likely prevent the system from booting.
