I think the find features for Firefox are somewhat inconsistent...for instance sometimes you can type "/" in a text box just fine, but other times it will pull up the quick find no matter what you were doing. I find the same is true for the ' key, where sometimes it just won't let you type it. I can't seem to find a pattern of when it will and when it won't though...any one else run across that? I usually just use ole' reliable Ctrl-F and go on my way.

#FindToolbar > * {display: -moz-box; }
Add that to your userChrome.css to get the quickfind to have all the features of the regular find.

There's a quicker way to invoke quickfind.. just start typing.

The / shortcut would seem to be there for vi users, C-f for those more used to the Windows/Mac way. Nice of them to consider the muscle memory factor. Too many developers don't think about the value of consistency.

This doesn't work for me. I seem to recall it used to with Firefox v.1x.

Do you have it set in the Preferences? Advanced > General > Accessibility

I have Opera set up with similar bindings.
/me hugs Opera, with super-configurable keybindings (if you can figure it out)

Strange, I thought it relied on whether you're in a text box or not. Never got any difficulty with this.
@Mr Green: thanks for the /. That's just a little bit easier and faster to type than Ctrl+F.

That's the way it should work, but every now and then it will get confused and do the searches on ' or / even when you're in a text box...I guess you have to restart Firefox for it to fix itself. A couple of other people who commented on the Digg story about this had the same issue (so I'm not just crazy ).
Also, if you didn't know the difference, if you use the apostrophe version ', then it will only search links, if you use the forward slash version /, it will search all text, just the same as Ctrl-F.
