Help!!! Ktorrent freezes my system...

Hi!

I have some problem with Ktorrent. Every time I want do download something the program starts to freeze within the first 3 minutes after I started it. Some seconds after that the whole system also freezes and I can only push the reset button. This problem exists since a couple of versions and I can't fix it. I also posted at the ktorrent forum, but nobody there knows what the problem might be. I also tried to debug the program, but using gdb didn't help me, because when it starts freezing there's no output from gdb and after some seconds the terminal freezes, too so I can't figure out what happens. Even pressing ctrl+c don't work because everything freezes within a blink of an eye...
Does anybody have similar problems or know how to find out what the problem might be? I don't know what else I could do.... sad

Thanks!

Re: Help!!! Ktorrent freezes my system...

mearly a suggestion
try backing up ~.kde then remove it
re login should start with a fresh kde run ktorrent if system freezes its beyond user permissions
if it runs ok then something not right in user settings stored in ~.kde
ktorrent works ok here so i would say something aint quite right with yours

Re: Help!!! Ktorrent freezes my system...

I tried running Ktorrent after removing the whole .kde folder. Even after that the freezing still happens. I think it might have something to do with some of the settings I made combined with the plugins I'm running. Can somebody who's successful running Ktorrent tell me what settings you're using and which plugins are currently loaded?

Thanks!

Re: Help!!! Ktorrent freezes my system...

Now I completely don't understand what's happening.... I have exacly the same version running.... or better freezing.... big_smile
I have no idea why this happens. After running a couple of minutes my harddisk starts working with a typical sound where I know that it'll freeze now. Never heard the drive sound that way while using Azureus or something. So it's very typical for the freezing process I guess.... and after that I can only push the reset button since nothing else works....

Any ideas???

Re: Help!!! Ktorrent freezes my system...

try going here grab the prepackaged arch version
run

pacman -U /path/to/pkg.tar.gz

maybe a diffrent compilation or version will work for you also check ktorrent forums
just a thought do you get any errors if you open terminal & run ktorrent from there

Re: Help!!! Ktorrent freezes my system...

KTorrent (2.1) runs fine here, no problems so far.

About my settings: I only changed the ports and dont use upnp, everything else is set to the standard config...

want a modular and tweaked KDE for arch? try kdemod

Re: Help!!! Ktorrent freezes my system...

If you use vfat partitions your system can freeze for a while

Re: Help!!! Ktorrent freezes my system...

Hi!

Thanks for the reply!
I have this problem since the first time I used Ktorrent in Arch (which was at version 1.8 or 1.9 as far as I remember). I'm going to disable every plugin again except the ipfilter. I know I did this before with a previous version, but well, maybe I'm more lucky now. Since I'm not using a vfat partition I don't know what else it could be except one thing:

As I mentioned before, I can hear the harddisk making some clearly recognizable sound the moment everything starts crashing. After reading that vfat sometimes is responsible for freezing one thing came to my mind: Does anyone of you use ktorrent on a reiser4 partition. Because I'm doing this and maybe this causes the freezing.
Except this I really can't think of anything more that could cause this problem. I even removed the whole .kde folder to check it out, but the result was the same. Total freeze within some minutes of running and an immediate freeze when updating the ipfilter during running downloads....

Thanks!

Re: Help!!! Ktorrent freezes my system...

I was right!

After creating a small ext3 partition and saving a torrent file to this partition it all worked like a charm. No freezing at all!

But now I question myself if this is a reiser4 problem or a ktorrent problem. Since Azureus runs fine on my system using the reiser4 partition I'm not sure if it's a problem with the filesystem rather than a bug in ktorrent.
The first respond from a ktorrent developer was that he thinks it's a reiser4 problem, but I don't know. I mean, as I said, Azureus never had any problem with the reiser4 partition...

What do you guys think?
