Re: X server crashes after USB disconnect

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*.sh; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"

You're sourcing 50-systemd-user.sh to import the environment and the xorg log looks unsuspicious (but that server also didn't crash)

May 12 09:43:17 t480 kernel: usb 1-1: USB disconnect, device number 2
May 12 09:43:58 t480 systemd[1]: Unmounting EFI System Partition Automount...

May 12 09:44:51 t480 systemd-coredump[2639]: [?] Process 1811 (Xorg) of user 1000 dumped core.

So you disconnected some USB device (what is that specifically or can it be any usb key?), 41s later /efi gets unmounted, another 40s later probably some gtk client starts and triggers AT-SPI and portal and 3s later (after a total of 94s since the usb disconnect) the X server crashes.

Is the usb trigger actually realible? Do you recall what process started there, triggering all those services? Does running any gtk4 client kill the X11 server?

Re: X server crashes after USB disconnect

The USB trigger is consistent, I tried disconnecting a keyboard and X crashed right away:

pavucontrol and nm-connection-editor (both using gtk4) do not crash the system.

I also tested disconnecting mouse and keyboard on a different USB port, in that case no crash happened:

May 13 09:28:17 t480 systemd[1687]: Failed to start Dunst notification daemon.

So I wonder if there is some hardware issue with that USB port, or if it is something specific to the t480…
Port causing the crash is labeled as 2 in this image.

Re: X server crashes after USB disconnect

So 6s after yanking the usb key Xorg segfaults w/ a nullptr resolution, for the other key you're triggering dunst via dbus (and fail because it's already running)
This is probably some udev rule responding to the key withdrawal and - I suspect - blocks IO devices resulting in the Xorg crash.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Udev#Debug_output

udevadm control --log-priority=debug
udevadm control --log-priority=info

Udev then should™ log into the system journal, hopefully exposing the cause.

Re: X server crashes after USB disconnect

Err… did you just set the log level forth and back?
The idea was to raise "udevadm control --log-priority=debug", disconnect the usb, see your X11 session die, then lower to "udevadm control --log-priority=info" again so we get to see what's happening around the unplugging.

Re: X server crashes after USB disconnect

Something™ is triggering the dunst service, but doesn't seem to be a udev rule?

grep -rE 'ify|busctl' /{usr/lib,etc}/udev/rules.d

This fails

May 13 19:36:11 t480 systemd[1681]: dunst.service: Scheduled restart job, restart counter is at 2.
May 13 19:36:11 t480 systemd[1681]: Starting Dunst notification daemon...

May 13 19:36:11 t480 systemd[1681]: Failed to start Dunst notification daemon.

cause dunst is already running (but not started by your xinitrc) and X11 crashes immediately afterwards.

Let's see how much of that is coincidence…

systemctl --user mask dunst.service
sudo mkdir -p /etc/dbus-1/services
sudo ln -s /dev/null /etc/dbus-1/services/org.knopwob.dunst.service

That should thoroughly prevent the dunst invocation - any idea what might try to message you about the event?

Sidebar, since you're disabling the touchpad, removing the likely only pointer device is maybe not a good testcase (though I've never seen Xorg freaking out about losing the core device, sanity check: this isn't xlibre?)

Re: X server crashes after USB disconnect

The dunst event is probably because I have this (user-defined) service file:

[Unit]
Description=Dunst notification daemon
Documentation=man:dunst(1)
PartOf=graphical-session.target
After=graphical-session.target

[Service]
Type=dbus
BusName=org.freedesktop.Notifications
ExecStart=/usr/bin/dunst
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
StartLimitBurst=5
Environment=DISPLAY=:0

[Install]
WantedBy=graphical-session.target

I have uninstalled dunst to see if it is the source of X crash, it is not the case.

I do not disable the touchpad but the laptop's touchscreen.
I use xorg not xlibre.

Re: X server crashes after USB disconnect

it is not the case

Fuck.

Do you have the Xorg.*.log.old that covers the crash? (the backtrace will likely tail it)

I do not disable the touchpad but the laptop's touchscreen.

Ok, but tbc, any usb key w/ some random data will do - this is not triggered by removing input devices?

There're three things sticking out in the udev log

May 13 19:36:10 t480 systemd-udevd[488]: Skipping overridden file '/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules'.
May 13 19:36:10 t480 (udev-worker)[1917]: input5::numlock: /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/60-input-id.rules:9 IMPORT{builtin}="hwdb 'id-input:usb:v$attr{id/vendor}p$attr{id/product}:name:$attr{name}:'": Importing properties from results of builtin command "hwdb 'id-input:usb:v3151p3020:name:YICHIP Wireless Device:'".
May 13 19:36:10 t480 (udev-worker)[1918]: input5::kana: /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/60-input-id.rules:9 IMPORT{builtin}="hwdb 'id-input:usb:v$attr{id/vendor}p$attr{id/product}:name:$attr{name}:'": Importing properties from results of builtin command "hwdb 'id-input:usb:v3151p3020:name:YICHIP Wireless Device:'".

Try to remove https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/android-udev/ and it's clients.
The other thing (I don't think kana specifically is that important here) is that the device obviously gets removed, meaning "60-input-id.rules:9" should™ not be reached.

x-ref, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=309989
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p2293091

For the latter and if it's not android you'd have to try to downgrade systemd to 257 (make sure to have some live distro around if you have to re-upgrade and fix the system offline, downgrading systemd in isolation by multiple versions is as dicey as it gets)

Re: X server crashes after USB disconnect

Dunst and gets triggered by the android removal…
That crash might be induced by reloading the udev database
=> does either "udevadm control --reload" or "udevadm trigger" induce a crash as well?

Afterwards, X won't crash anymore, even when disconnecting usb 1-1.
Edit: after a reboot, I noticed X keep crashing...

This is rather curious, what does the udev debug now look like? Still hitting the odd paths for the removal?
Does reloading the rules replicate this (one crash from that but the usb port is fine)?

Is the device you retract typically attached when the the X11 server starts or does plugging and then unplugging a usb key cause the same?

Do you have the Xorg.*.log.old that covers the crash? (the backtrace will likely tail it)

None of these commands induced the crash.

The crash happens only once, the plugging and unplugging again won't induce the crash anymore.

but tbc, any usb key w/ some random data will do - this is not triggered by removing input devices?

I removed

xinput set-prop "ELAN Touchscreen" "Device Enabled" 0

from my .xinitrc and now the crash is gone after usb 1-1 disconnect.
I verified the crash is fixed after rebooting the system as well.

Re: X server crashes after USB disconnect

I removed xinput set-prop "ELAN Touchscreen" "Device Enabled" 0 from my .xinitrc and now the crash is gone after usb 1-1 disconnect.

[ 16.910] (II) config/udev: Adding input device YICHIP Wireless Device Mouse (/dev/input/mouse0)
[ 16.926] (II) config/udev: Adding input device ELAN Touchscreen (/dev/input/mouse1)
[    16.941] (II) config/udev: Adding input device Synaptics TM3276-022 (/dev/input/mouse2)
[    16.949] (II) config/udev: Adding input device TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint (/dev/input/mouse3)

So is the usb device you're removing to trigger this the wireless mouse (dongle)?
What if you instead ignore the device?
