new freetype2 suckx

just downgraded back to freetype2-2.2.1-4. 2.3.1 is freaking ugly, with the fonts all spread out and weird looking. i couldn't find any option added to the /conf.d to fix it, and really didn't have time to mess with it, so i just reinstalled the old version. anyone else noticing a difference? post any fixes here.

Re: new freetype2 suckx

Funny, I have two boxes and the only change in the fonts I can see is in Firefox. Other than that fonts seem very much the same.

Re: new freetype2 suckx

Yeah, fonts definitely aren't as sharp and crisp as they were before.  They seem overly fuzzy to me.

You know, I've been using Linux for six years now and fonts have never been consistent.  It seems like someone is always messing with them, and after I spend lots of time tweaking them to my liking, they get messed with again.

Re: new freetype2 suckx

All font issues can be summed up in one simple statement:

/etc/fonts/ changed somehow

Can someone verify what has changed in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf from version to version? Also what symlinks were changed in /etc/fonts/conf.d/?

This will be helpful in diagnosing the issue.

For me, I use my own local ~/.fonts.conf with my preferred settings, so global changes really don't affect me.  This is probably a smart idea if you tend to take issue with font changes often.

i don't agree, because when i reverted to the old freetype2, everything went back to the way it was before without changing anything in /etc/fonts. unless the package has a script that adds/removes symlinks to the conf.d/ directory?

Re: new freetype2 suckx

Me too, the "render" is ok, but it's different, something like bigger?¿?¿?

freetype2 is a pkg that when it upgrades, i think: let's see how are the fonts now ;-)

My "solution" is: wait for a couple of days and become confortable with the "new" fonts :-)

Re: new freetype2 suckx

I agree, I don't like the new fonts.
Anyway, I grabbed the cvs tree of freetype2, compiled and installed it, and now the spacing issue seems fixed. The characters rendering is a bit different than freetype 2.2, though.

Many fonts are bigger after upgrade (firefox, mc) and looks pretty bad. For now I was back to old version of freetype.

I don't notice any difference, but I also have a local ~/.fonts.conf.

I updated freetype2 to the 2.3.1-1 version yesterday and I have no problems with the fonts appearance on my machine. All is OK in Konsole and Firefox.

Ewwww here.

And it's the symlinks in /etc/fonts that probably changed, because I have a ~/.fonts.conf and firefox got ugggggly.

Re: new freetype2 suckx

Freetype2 doesn't change any file, it just uses different rendering algorithms. It could be that you're using some experimental thing (autohinter?) that got "improved" with the last freetype2 update.
IMHO fonts look great with the new freetype2. I always get complaints about fonts not looking as they were, or fonts looking different from the ones on MS Windows, but IMHO, on every freetype2 upgrade, in general, the fonts look better, they're just different from the previous version.

Re: new freetype2 suckx

The strange thing is that all my KDE applications still render fonts in exactly the same way they did before the freetype2-2.3.1 upgrade, but Firefox, GKrellM, and other non-KDE apps now render fonts in the new way.

I don't mind the new way... I kind of like it.

But it does bother me that I now have 2 inconsistent styles of font rendering visible at the same time. Does anyone know how I might be able to correct this?

Here's what's in my /etc/fonts/conf.d:

10-autohint.conf 30-replace-bitmap-fonts.conf 50-user.conf
10-no-sub-pixel.conf 30-urw-aliases.conf 51-local.conf
20-fix-globaladvance.conf 40-generic.conf 69-unifont.conf
20-unhint-small-vera.conf 49-sansserif.conf 70-no-bitmaps.conf

I don't have a ~/fonts.conf or /etc/fonts/local.conf.

Yes, this is a very nice thing about KDE. smile I have been happy with my fonts since 3.4. And using the gtk-qt-engine remedies most problems I have with gtk, too.

If you are using KDE you probably have a ~/.fonts.conf (notice the dot).

Yes, Gtk-Qt is brilliant. ^_^

And I do appreciate that I won't have to re-tweak my KDE to make fonts look right again. I just don't appreciate the inconsistency. ^^;

mutlu_inek wrote:

Sorry, typo on my part. tongue

KDE 3.5.6 no longer creates a ~/.fonts.conf without asking (the Fonts kcontrol module uses a tri-state checkbox for the anti-aliasing option), and I manually deleted ~/.fonts.conf to keep it consistent with the global config.

I tried creating a completely new account and using that to log into KDE as an experiment, but fonts still follow the old-style rendering in most KDE apps. Oddly, kdesktop (and its menus, dialogues, etc.) uses the new font rendering style.

Yes, it was freetype2 upgraded not fontconfig (which owns /etc/fonts files).

JGC wrote:

I wouldn't call it experimental. IMHO it's now the only good looking option.

Sometimes it's also a good idea to run fc-cache -fv as root after any font related package upgrade and/or reinstall packages with fonts (which should do basically the same).

Yes and no :-) Generally they do look better but not always. I mean for some font configurations (font face, size etc.) they have "broken" kerning (too much space between letters and not enough space between words). Like they were treated as monospace fonts. In 90% of the cases it's better and in 10% it's a little worse. So, I guess it is an improvement :-)

Examples of good (IMHO) looking fonts after the upgrade:
11qd2.th.png21mr7.th.png

An example of wide kerning:
31at9.th.png(I had better example which showed wider kerning making fonts ~150% of the space they were before but I can't find it)

Anyway, for me it's only a minor issue and I'm not going to downgrade.

EDIT: I've just found out that in firefox it looks even more wide :-)
Opera:
59573151oe8.th.png
Firefox:
51902467xf5.th.png
...or maybe I'm just looking at it for too long :-)

Re: new freetype2 suckx

This is what I've got.

Before:
beforeoi5.th.png

After:
afterha6.th.png

Fiddling with the Gnome Font Preferences really shows how freetype2 rendering has changed. Size differences due to hinting are huge, and in general fonts are more blurry.

I removed ttf-dejavu fonts and everything is OK now. But what about dejavu fonts? It is possible to install them properly with new freetype?
