I'm unable to login when waking up (X minutes to login), and the battery is drained in the morning. This happens sporadically and I can't figure out what triggers it. Last night I noticed that the power button was lit through the closed laptop lid. I rebooted the laptop (hard reset, long-press on power) and closed all applications, but it continued anyways. I have a T460 with the LTS Linux kernel, and I run TLP for power management.

Is this a bug or is something truly trying out passwords? What can I do to figure out what is trying passwords?

I appreciate your help in figuring out what is causing this, let me know what extra information is required, thank you.

Re: Continuous wake up and account lockout during suspend (infected?)

pam_unix(gdm-password:auth): conversation failed
auth could not identify password for [taco]

pretty much different from "authentication failure" or other, probably means PAM expected a password prompt/response but didn't get one

also why is the machine  bouncing in and out of suspend?
can you post the full journal logs for the "affected" boot?

Re: Continuous wake up and account lockout during suspend (infected?)

The suspend happens after ~25s (one dbus timeout) but the wakeup looks sporadic - spurious input (mouse, wifi)?

Thanks for the responses.

Re: Continuous wake up and account lockout during suspend (infected?)

Stuff is gonna happen when the system wakes up smile
The idea was to determine whether there's spurious input and assuming you don't have https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wake-on-LAN configured the most likely contender is some external USB device.
Assuming this is a permanent situation you can check this at daytime by sleeping the system, checking whether it wakes up, unplugging all external devices, see whether it still wakes up and if not add devices until one breaks the sleep again.

Re: Continuous wake up and account lockout during suspend (infected?)

Haha thank you Seth, I thought the same thing after posting. There is only one USB device which is a dongle for my wireless mouse. Perhaps it is detecting movement while there is none, and this keeps waking up the system. Actually, I've noticed that even when I'm away from the mouse, it sometimes shows up while watching a movie, as if it were moving.

I've tried to disable it waking up:

$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 413c:8505 Dell Computer Corp. Dell Universal Receiver

$ grep 8505 /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/idProduct
/sys/bus/usb/devices/1-6/idProduct:8505

$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/90-usb-wakeup.rules
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", DRIVERS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="413c", ATTRS{idProduct}=="8505", ATTR{power/wakeup}="disabled", ATTR{driver/1-6/power/wakeup}="disabled"

# udevadm control --reload-rules && udevadm trigger

$ cat /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-6/power/wakeup
disabled

Unfortunately, it still wakes up on movement. I'll dig around tomorrow. Thanks for all the help!

Re: Continuous wake up and account lockout during suspend (infected?)

cat /proc/acpi/wakeup

And I'd just unplug it over night and see whether the system still wakes up.
