Hardware:
- Model: Huawei MateBook D15 (BOD-WXX9, baseboard BOD-WXX9-PCB-B5)
- CPU: Intel Core i3-1115G4 (Tiger Lake)
- Audio codec: ES8336 (on I2C2 bus) + SN6140 (HDA)
- Kernel: 7.0.12-arch1-1
Problem:
Internal microphone does not work. Speakers and headphone jack work fine.
Root cause identified:
The ES8336 codec is visible in ACPI (ESSX8336:00, status=15, path: \_SB_.PC00.I2C2.ESSX)
and NHLT tables report 2 DMICs. However, the I2C2 controller (PCI 00:15.2) is never
initialized by the BIOS — it does not appear in lspci or dmesg at all. Only I2C0
(00:15.0) is initialized (used for touchpad).
The sof-essx8336 platform driver enters "deferred probe pending" state because
the ES8336 codec never appears on the I2C bus.
Note: A DMI quirk for BOD-WXX9 exists in kernel 7.0 (matched by DMI_PRODUCT_NAME),
but the issue is not in the quirk — the I2C controller itself is not brought up.
A similar patch was recently merged for BOD-WXX9-PCB-B2 (commit 6b641122d31f).
My board revision is PCB-B5 which may have different ACPI tables.
Relevant dmesg:
[5.xxx] sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl: DMICs detected in NHLT tables: 2
[5.xxx] sof-essx8336: quirk DMIC enabled
[15.xxx] platform sof-essx8336: deferred probe pending: (reason unknown)
lspci shows only 00:15.0 (I2C Controller #0) — 00:15.2 is absent.
i2cdetect on all buses (0-11) shows no ES8336 device.
ACPI status of ESSX8336:00 = 15 (present and enabled).
Any suggestions on how to bring up the I2C2 controller or create an ACPI override
would be appreciated.
