Re: Mic just outputs white noise!

Also probably

amixer
amixer -Dhw:0

Static input might come from an (unused) external mic or line-in?

Re: Mic just outputs white noise!

Please use

tags. Edit your post in this regard.

Simple mixer control 'Mic Boost',0
 Front Left: 0 [0%] [0.00dB]
 Front Right: 0 [0%] [0.00dB]
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
 Front Left: Capture 63 [100%] [30.00dB] [on]
 Front Right: Capture 63 [100%] [30.00dB] [on]
Simple mixer control 'Auto-Mute Mode',0
 Item0: 'Disabled'
Simple mixer control 'Internal Mic Boost',0
 Front Left: 3 [100%] [30.00dB]
 Front Right: 3 [100%] [30.00dB]
Simple mixer control 'Rear Mic Boost',0
 Front Left: 0 [0%] [0.00dB]
 Front Right: 0 [0%] [0.00dB]

There're three "Mic Boost"s, another Capture device and some auto-mute switch.

alsamixer -Dhw:0 # you'll have to press F4 to switch to input devices

Try to play with those (just ramp all up while yelling at a wall until you can hear yourself yelling over the heaphones, then reduce the other ones until the noise is gone)

If you mean this issue, you didn't fix it. According to the description, there was some malfunction, and symptoms disappeared after reboot.

How?

Do you hear that noise on your system? Can you record it?
The noise may be injected as a "comfort noise" by your communication software, so other people hear it while your audio source is completely quiet.

Re: Mic just outputs white noise!

How?

i made a conf file using nano in etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
and put

options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1
options snd_hda_intel model=laptop-dmic

in there

Do you hear that noise on your system? Can you record it?

yes i can record it

… internal mic … dont capture any sound …  and internal mic outputs only static

?
Did you try to alter the left/right channels of that microphone separately?
Also try to produce some sound very close to the microphone.

what i meant is that it doesnt react to me talking or any sound at all, it doesnt capture anything and only outputs static

tried, doesnt work

Different revisions may have different hardware. What is output of

# dmidecode -s baseboard-product-name

?

Do you have sof-firmware package installed?
Try to install it if not. Then reboot and show

$ dmesg | grep snd_hda_intel

and test the mic.

Try to comment out that "snd_hda_intel model=laptop-dmic", reboot, check dmesg and test mic again.
Edit: remove "options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1" as well.

Re: Mic just outputs white noise!

sudo dmidecode -s baseboard-product-name

outputs

MS-15K1

and

sudo dmesg | grep snd_hda_intel

outputs

commented out, removed, rear mic disappeared but the static is still there, althought i cant make the static louder now, but in general microphone still doesnt seem to work

Re: Mic just outputs white noise!

ALC256 Analog i think

So probably not a digital microphone?

Did you try "headset-mic" or "alc256-asus-mic"?

Dual boot? 3rd link in seth's signature, mandatory.

Is / was sof-firmware installed?
Doesn't Fn+F6 enable mic?

Re: Mic just outputs white noise!

i dont have dual boot, yes sof-firmware is installed, fn+f6 doesnt do anything cause microphone is already on but still only outputs static, i'll try to put

alc256-asus-mic

into the conf file right now

Re: Mic just outputs white noise!

How do you check whether mic works? Actually there are two paths for feedback:
Hardware, when microphone is wired to output directly in circuit. Sound servers (pipewire/pulseaudio) usually disable it. However, with digital mic this path may be not available.
Software, when sound server mixes mic stream into output stream. Moreover, sound server usually mix mic signal to output only while capturing. So absense of feedback to output does not always mean that mic doesn't work.

BTW,

$ pacmd list-sources

?

There may be misconfguration on different levels: kernel driver, alsa, sound server.

Run

alsamixer -Dhw:0 -V capture

and try to increase 'Mic Boost' while capturing audio.

Perhaps easiest way to play around sound server settings is to install and run pavucontrol. Check "Profile:" in "Configuration" tab first. Then go to "Input Devices", select internal mic, unmute it and increase gain.

Re: Mic just outputs white noise!

i use OBS to check

bash: pacmd: command not found

increasing/decreasing mic boost or internal mic boost does nothing, in pavucontrol i found "GA107 High Definition Audio Controller" but it is off, changing to "Pro Audio" makes all sound disappear and adds more output devices  :
GA107 High Definition Audio Controller Pro, GA107 High Definition Audio Controller Pro 7,  GA107 High Definition Audio Controller Pro 8,  GA107 High Definition Audio Controller Pro 9.

changing Built-In-Audio from "Analog-Stereo-Duplex" to "Pro Audio" changes the output from "Built-In Analog Stereo" to "Built-In Audio Pro 3" but i cant hear any sound when changing to that, even though i see that pavucontrol and OBS hear it

arecord -Dhw:0 -f cd > some.wav

i recorded and i only heard static after listening, but, in the very start there is a relatively loud snap sound
edit: i tried headset-mic just now, still nothing

Do you have a headset that you can plug into the phone jack?
Does that behave correctly?
If you're booting some live distro, does the sound and microphone there work OOTB?
