setting the display on a voip phone

I've got a cheap usb voip phone which has a display. When I plug it into a ubuntu box the display says "voip" when I plug it into arch it shows a date.

All this is without any voip software running, on the ubuntu box it is displayed even with power off. How can I control the display in arch?
