hdajackretask doesn't work anymore?

Whenever I reinstall Linux, I use HDAJackRetask to make sure that all speakers on my laptop work. I have a specific pin configuration to make sure that the LFE and side speakers work (or else only the front speakers work). This has worked flawlessly until recently.

Now, however, it seems that HDAJackRetask doesn't do anything anymore. If I apply my pin configuration, it now does nothing. A look at the kernel logs suggests that it isn't even being loaded. The app is now laggy (RAM is not an issue), and seems to not work. I tried looking into an ALSA configuration that would get my speakers to work, but it seems that none exists for my sound card (Realtek ALC245).

Any way to get all speakers to work?

There shouldn't be an inherent relation to this, hdajackretask simply adjusts pin layouts on hda cards afaik nothing about this inherent mechansim should have changed. I could see your card getting picked up by sof instead of snd-hda, what does

lspci -k
sudo dmesg | grep -E 'snd|sof'

give you?

Yeah you're running on Sof here, afaik hda jack retask never really worked with that but you also have a normal HDA codec so you might be able to switch over painlessly. has "used to work" been on this same hardware? Which kernel versions? In any case, try adding

snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver=1

to your kernel parameters and check whether it works/you get "normal" snd-hda-intel as the driver.

Nope! That didn't work, now my volume is stuck at 100%. After disabling the kernel parameter, a speaker test shows that the system thinks that it only has mono:

speaker-test is mono by default unless you pass -c2 for dual channel and so forth for more channels. But it did pick up your hda jack config now:

No, my sound is still stuck at 100%. If the speaker volume is set to even 2% or 0% without muting, it plays at the maximum volume.

Thank you, that stopped the blaring volume, and my bass is now working, but my side speakers are not working.

You can't see it, but there are speakers beneath my touchpad. Those are working, as is the bass. But do you also see the speakers on either side of the keyboard (side speakers)? Those are not working.

I tried:

speaker-test -w -c 4

but both front and rear are being played on the touchpad speakers (confirmed by putting my hands over them).

Ok, so I looked a little harder and realized that my pin config was missing 0x1e - overridden to internal speaker compared to my former config. So I changed that, but now I get no sound, whether the soft mixer is on or not. Interestingly, my audio options have now increased to include 4.1, 5.0, and 5.1 audio.

In the past, the audio would temporarily change to the HDMI port until I switched the output device, but in pavucontrol on sway, the HDMI card doesn't even show as an option to switch from. So I'm genuinely stuck here

This has worked flawlessly until recently.

Does it still work w/ the LTS kernel? (if you can get a working setup we can look for differences, maybe the HW is captured by a different kernel module now)

Sorry, I've been busy the past week so I haven't had time to get back to this.

I tried booting using the LTS kernel. Interesting, it's partially fixed only when I set the output settings to "Analog Stereo Output" or "Analog Stereo Duplex". But this disables the touchpad speakers and only results in the side speakers (and apparently LFE). So tl;dr I got the side speakers working but now the other speakers aren't working. If I use any of the surround options, no sound plays. This works even in the Linux kernel.

I assume this is because I used a pin config that worked for a different laptop model? (I assumed it would work on my laptop as the OP is also using a Realtek ALC245.) How do I test if my pin configuration is correct, and find the correct one? I think I'm really close to fixing this but now have to figure out how the fix the touchpad speakers that were working.

My HDAJackRetask configuration is below, in case Reddit blocks you from seeing the post (it seems they've been doing that a lot recently):

No, when I tested the pin configuration, I used the fixed config.

Interestingly I found this weird configuration issue. Remember the pin config I shared earlier:

Notice that I overrode the speakers which were already set to Internal speaker (0x17) right? Interestingly, when I override 0x17, only the side speakers are driven. But if I don't override it, only the back (touchpad speakers) and LFE are driven. But even when the back and LFE driven, I still can't use Surround (when I select any of the Surround options and play a YouTube video nothing is played; maybe I need to upconvert?), and "CLFE" is replaced by "Speaker Front" in ALSA Mixer. Changing "CLFE" does nothing, but reducing "Speaker Front" reduces the whole volume...

Maybe I should try "Advanced configuration" in HDAJackRetask?

This is getting very confusing...

Edit 1: I tried upmixing, but that's made for 4.0, 5.1, or 7.1. Mine is "technically" 4.1, so it does not accept upmixing. I.e. that went nowhere.
Edit 2: I found an ALSA plugin that may work, but I'm not sure how to apply it: plug:surround41

I tried the original config I was using (forcing 0x17 to be an Internal Speaker when it was already an Internal Speaker). Perhaps it'd be helpful to describe what happens when I change the different sliders in alsamixer:
- When I reduce CLFE, there is no perceptible sound difference.
- When I mute Speaker Surround, the sound goes away entirely.
- When I reduce Line Out, the sound goes away. Nothing gets the touchpad speakers to work.

When I was talking about "Surround options", I was talking about the ones in pavucontrol. When I use a test file, I can only hear "Rear Left" and "Rear Right". When I use speaker-test, both "Front" and "Rear" come from the side speakers.

Is there anything else I can try besides hdajackretask, perhaps? I tried removing the boot override for good measure and now only the touchpad speakers are firing. I also tried:
- All of the sound profiles, including, 2.1 and 5.1
- Changing 0x17 or 0x1e to Internal Speaker (Back)

But neither of these got the front and touchpad speakers to fire at the same time.

re-establish the working environment, ie. downgrade the kernel, possibly the firmware - make sure to use SOF (or not) as you would have used to etc.

Whenever I reinstall Linux, I use HDAJackRetask to make sure that all speakers on my laptop work.

Is there any reference for your hardware and this you've based that action on?
