Gapless playback in amarok?

Anybody knows how to make it work properly? I get following text in .xsession-errors
amarok:                   [xine-engine] gapless playback enabled.
but still i get random length (rather very short) pauses between ogg songs or cd tracks...

Re: Gapless playback in amarok?

wchich settings are important? I left most things as it was initially:
0 ms pause,
xine output
output plugin: alsa
configuration:
mono: default                 4 channels: plug:surround40:0
stereo: default                 6 channels: plug:surround51:0

speakers: Stereo 2.0

(Sorry if there are mistakes - I use polish version of amarok).

Re: Gapless playback in amarok?

In Playback widget in amarok settings you can set the crossfade/gap (and fadeout in svn version).

-edit-

Ah, i see you have the gap set to 0 ms.
You might try building the svn version - there was a problem with cutting the end of mp3s, I think it has been fixed in svn. That could alleviate your problem.

Re: Gapless playback in amarok?

Well - this happens to oggs and compact disks...

Anyway - I'm newbie... what does it mean "build svn version"? Should I download newest beta from amarok page and type 'make'? What will happen to my amarok package I downloaded with pacman?

Or maybe it will apear in pacman updates if I wait week or two?

Re: Gapless playback in amarok?

I don't know whether it's limited to mp3s.

Are you familiar with AUR/ABS? There's a amarok-base-svn PKGBUILD in AUR which you could use.

-edit-

You could wait, but who knows when the stable version will be out.

Re: Gapless playback in amarok?

I'm not familiar... It's time to read wiki wink

There's only one thing i worry about - if I build programs myself instead of downlowding them with pacman, can it make my system "dirty" - just like windows become slower after installing too many programs. Is there any control over the files created during building? Or maybe it just doesn't matter (only if I don't care that some files take some of my disk space)?

Re: Gapless playback in amarok?

If you build packages from AUR using ABS, pacman will take care of it. That's the purpose of it.

You can erase all the files used during build.

Re: Gapless playback in amarok?

Just to be sure, gapless playback doesn't work very well with mp3 files because they are padded at the end, or something. I know you mention oggs in your first post but just in case. smile

Re: Gapless playback in amarok?

ogg, ogg... and compact discs.

With mp3 I have worse problems (like cut endings). And the worst are wma's and m4a - I lose 1 second at the begining and at the end. I have to re-rip many of my cds I have ripped in windows...

Re: Gapless playback in amarok?

I had the same problem in Amarok. Even though xine is supposed to support gapless playback, it never worked for me. I solved it by switching to mpd with qmpdclient as frontend.

Re: Gapless playback in amarok?

I failed to configure mpd sad But I found aqualung. It's not in arch repos but I (still newbie...) managed to compile it without problems. Now there are realy no gaps between tracks. Also it works with jack and ladspa plugins.

It's beta and amarok has more useful functions, but it seems it goes good direction!
