Horrid performance from Ultra 7 155H (ThinkPad E16 Gen 2))

Hello,

I have a problem with this CPU because it is constantly underperforming and lagging the whole system and I'm starting to lose my mind.

The problem is that whenever there is a heavy task, cargo build, reindexing large projects, etc. , instead of the CPUs ramping up in frequency, they rather "power down" and cores start running to sub 1000Mhz.

During such task, mpstat -P ALL 1 shows CPU usage in the range of 70% while ramping up up to all cores being at 92-98% usage when reindexing large files and the core frequencies stay low. The most I've seen a core running at during heavy tasks is 1400Mhz, while I've seen cores running at 3000-4000Mhz while the laptop is idle.

While I don't expect the system to run silky-smooth when building on all cores, it doesn't make sense to be degrading the performance of the whole system so much that even scrolling a webpage becomes choppy.

Any help and ideas are welcome.

Have you checked your disk usage? You are using btrfs, have you optimised this for compiling. It seems to me your 'heavy tasks' are all disk intensive, do you trim after prolonged 'heavy tasks'? Is your disk throughput what you would expect?

look specifically at the section where they compare the clock speeds under load, looks like lenovo have gone with lower clock speeds and a smaller cooler, look at the other laptops with the same cpu, all vary in performance due to the manufacturers cooling and power delivery implementaions.

EDIT:
you can try "s-tui" its a great terminal based stress tester that shows plenty of info like clock speeds, temps, and power, make sure you run as root user to get full functionality, that will tell you whether its the disk or the cpu causing the lag i guess

While indeed it seems that the Thinkpad is underperforming with that CPU, those temps are much higher than mine. The fan always run at full speed and my temps never 65C.
