Counter-Strike 1.6 freezes system after Steam segfault (Intel GPU, Lin

Hello,

I'm experiencing a recurring issue while trying to play Counter-Strike 1.6 via Steam on Arch Linux.

Problem Description:
The game starts and runs normally for a few minutes in an online multiplayer server, but then the system freezes completely. The desktop becomes unresponsive, and I have to either switch to a TTY and kill the process via

htop

, or force a reboot.

Upon checking the logs, I noticed that the Steam client crashes with a segmentation fault (SIGSEGV) shortly before the freeze. After the Steam process exits, CS 1.6 is left running but frozen, consuming system resources and causing the entire system to become sluggish or unresponsive.

System Info:

  • GPU: Intel Iris Plus Graphics G1 (Ice Lake)

  • Kernel: Linux 6.14.2-zen1-1-zen

  • Desktop Environment: MATE

  • Steam: Native runtime (installed from Arch repos)

  • CS 1.6: Native Linux version (not Proton)

Relevant journalctl logs:

steam[5377]: segfault at 0 ip 0000000000000000 sp 00000000ccd55d5c error 14
systemd-coredump[6037]: Process 5377 (steam) terminated abnormally with signal 11/SEGV
steamclient.so + 0x25adcc3

Suspected Cause:
The crash occurs in steamclient.so, which may point to an issue with the Steam runtime or a conflict with the Intel graphics stack (Mesa). The game becomes orphaned and freezes the desktop session. This behavior also happened on other distros (like CachyOS), so I suspect it may not be Arch-specific. Possibilities include:

  • Intel GPU/Mesa driver issues

  • Zen kernel compatibility

  • Steam's native runtime handling of older GoldSrc games

Any suggestions or workarounds would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I doubt very much installing a vioce chat app will help with a segfault that freezes an entire system.

Please don't necro-bump .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky
