corefonts & new cleartype fonts from MS

Is it possible to get latest ClearType fonts included in Vista with the same idea as in the ttf-ms-fonts package installs older MS fonts?

Please see this post.

cheers,

Re: corefonts & new cleartype fonts from MS

Thanks for the hint on how to get the fonts. I created a PKGBUILD and uploaded it to AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … =1&ID=8475

Please comment on how it works for you.

If you like it, please vote for it in AUR.

Just curious, under which circumstances / what for would you use these fonts?

Calibri - too narrow, badly rendered crap
Cambria - good serif font, nice for web pages
Candara - good sans font, but numbers are screwed....
Consolas - good monospaced font. I use it for terminal and editors
Corbel - strokes are too thin....

Microsoft JhengHei & YaHei - Great chinese fonts, much better than arial unicode and all other free/non-free ones. But they're renderedly badly on windows 2003 wink

So doesn't really sound promising, I don't really care about anything from Microsoft, and I just only use ttf-ms-fonts for having websites shown correctly and ttf-bitstream-vera for the rest.

Re: corefonts & new cleartype fonts from MS

I get a lot of Word documents from others that I read/edit/print with OpenOffice. It can be quite annoying if I do not have the necessary fonts.

I myself do not integrate the MS fonts in documents, though. As you say, the fonts are not of a very high quality. And I am glad that I have not yet seen them on the web. I certainly did not intend to proliferate this stuff. Maybe it was not a good idea. I just thought having the option to read documents accurately may be good for others, too.

There's a vista-fonts package in AUR that includes these fonts.

I believe as Vista is released the fonts will be also commonly used. Not a bad idea to have the fonts to see things as intended..

Amusing is this quote from the site: "The Microsoft legal voles have contacted me, and apparently these fonts are NOT a free taster of the wonders of Vista. In short, they have to be removed. So, sorry Microsoft, and sorry, those of you who wanted to preview the shape of things to come. They are now removed."
