nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

i have lenovo ideapad gaming 3 with integrated Iris Xe graphics and dedicated GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile

> nvidia-smi
No devices were found

Re: nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

Please don't grep - post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | nc termbin.com 9999

(might be something like bumblebee/bbswitch or acpi_call powering the GPU down)
Do you dual-boot the system?

Since this is a Turing chip you could also try https://aur.archlinux.org/packages?O=0&K=580xx

swayenc produces a lot of errors, ultimately bails and THEN the nvidia errors pop up.

Step #1, only boot the multi-user.target (2nd link below) and check nvidia-smi from there.
If it responds, manually progress to the graphical target (starting sway) and see whether that changes anything about the GPU.

Might just be a race condition.

Re: nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/n … 14s/350097
You might want to check whether firmware (UEFI) updates are available for your device

https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite/issues/4494

I was able to resolve this issue by delete all nvidia*.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/ directory.

Don't just do that, but why are you blacklisting nvidia_uvm?

modprobe -c | grep -v alias | grep nvidia

W/ the closed source 580xx driver you may try to disable the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … P_firmware to possibly side-step this (this will not work w/ nvidia-open, it critically depends on the GSP)

Re: nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

Yes , firmware is up to date last update for my firmware was in 2024

Deleted my nvidia.conf, still the error

i am not blacklisting nvidia_uvm , i believe its in my mkinitcpio so it builts into the intramfs and systemd shows the error as its already loaded

> modprobe -c | grep -v alias | grep nvidia
options nvidia NVreg_UseKernelSuspendNotifiers=1
options nvidia NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp
options nvidia_drm modeset=1
options nvidia_drm fbdev=1
softdep nvidia pre: ecdh_generic,ecdsa_generic

I will try the 580xx version and report again if it solves it.

The firmware is from 2022… does it allow you to toggle rebar or other devices (wifi, camera, …)?

Does it help to add "pci=nocrs" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters ?
Do you run into this w/ the LTS kernel or eg. https://grml.org ("can't assign; no space" is unrelated to the nvidia driver)

No, it does not allow toggling rebar or any other device

pci=nocrs did not help

Re: nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

Hey there! I also used to have similar problems like this. If you're using the nouveau drivers, ditch them and get the "nvidia" drivers with the addition of "nvidia-utils" and "lib32-nvidia-utils". AND if you're using a different kernel make sure to get the respective "linux-XXXX-headers" along with the "nvidia-dkms" package instead of the normal one. make sure to enable the multilib and extra repo in your pacman.conf before doing so. after installation, edit your grub to have
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nvidia-drm.modeset=1"
then regenerate the grub config with "sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg"
then reboot and report here if it works

No change in HW

No options for 4g decoding or sr-iov support either

Is there a chance that its just broken/faulty gpu?

Re: nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

There's always a chance, but a bogus bus layout is rather not caused by a fused GPU core…
On a desktop I'd say you put the GPU into the wrong PCI slot, but that's not an option here hmm

Does a later bus rescan allow the GPU to be addressed?

You're sure that you cannot disable *any* devices in the BIOS? Not even the IGP or GPU?

Re: nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

Have to tried to … turn it off and back on again?
(Ie. the gpu: disable it, boot, re-enable it, boot again… any changes?)

Re: nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

Wifi and bluetooth are often provided by the same chip which stays active if only one of them is disabled .
Please try disabling both for testing purposes .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

And for clarification, because #18 does not say that at all: you did try to toggle the GPU (not only the wifi)?

Re: nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

is there any software that can give more information on what could be the problem?

Re: nvidia-smi shows "No devices were found"

The problem is that the device is not addressable - usually that's a bad hardware config or bogus BIOS.
For a notebook "bad hardware config" should™ not be a thing.

Does adding "pci=realloc" to the kernel parameters help (should have asked that before instead/along nocrs)

Otherwise you could try to lie to the BIOS and see whether that changes anything
