I've had a persistent issue since 17/18th August. No packages were synced immediately before the issue started. Some apps (steam) refuse to open at all - executing via .desktop or terminal does nothing, though tonight I got it to prompt me with "failed to run: timeout was reached". Some apps (Mozilla) appear in the xfce panel immediately after executing, although it does not visually appear or become interact-able for 20-30 seconds. New instances of Mozilla opened while the first is open, open instantly. Youtube will not play any video. Most apps (settings, terminal, even the whisker menu itself) open instantly, although only their window border is visible for 20-30 seconds. Buttons may be pushed, but they're invisible, and delay action until the menu appears graphically. I had screen tearing before I turned off compositing.

I have chased the following leads:
sudo pacman -Syu
Outdated lib32
Version mismatch nvidia packages
Failing xfwm4
Corrupted session cache
*Hanging D-Bus/xdg-desktop-portal (I suspect this is the most likely candidate issue from reading forums with similar symptoms, but I have no proof and syncing and restoring these apps has not improved the situation.

I've had arch for 8 months but I'm still very new to the technical language, so if you want to help please use as plain english instructions as possible. Thank you for your time.

AUTHOR UPDATE 1:

As a hail mary I backed up my .config and gutted it. Almost every problem I reported is resolved except that: Steam still will not execute by any means, and YouTube still will not start playback. I hope this narrows it down somewhat.

AUTHOR UPDATE 2:

After 2 reboots and tentatively reinstating some of my .config I'm almost willing to mark this solved; YouTube begins playback with a consistent but short delay, and Steam auto-start from boot works flawlessly, although I still cannot reopen it if I fully exit the app. I will play with it for another 24 hours and if it's persistently resolved I'll mark it as such.

AUTHOR UPDATE 3:

Unhappily reporting that the issues are returning; YouTube no longer begins playback and Steam does not start even from the auto-start after boot. I also have a new issue of random moments where my screen goes black, returning to normal a few seconds later. Terminal, Thunar, WM menus and Mozilla seem to be operating normally still, safe to say I'm back to the situation I was in after Author Update 1

The log is dated, but glxinfo and vainfo suggest that you're running on the nvidia GPU

For steam, try to run it from n interactive shell and post (in code tags) the errors it throws at you.
As for youtube

The only other browser other than firefox I have installed in palemoon which is essentially a firefox reskin as far as I'm aware. YTplayback issue also affects palemoon. I'll try to install a chromium one and see what happens

UPDATE: No luck with OperaGX, same playback issue
