SOLVED Blurry/Ghosting LCD with Nvidia-96xx

Hi all,

I've spent hours trying to figure this out...  I installed the Nvidia-96xx driver for my Geforce2 MX/MX 400 and everything seems ok in my xorg.conf.  XFCE comes up with the right resolution (1280x1024 Dell 1702fp), but everything is blurry.  When i use the Nvidia X Server Settings application, it looks like everything is running correctly - 1280x1024 @ 60hz.  But this doesn't seem right, because otherwise everything wouldn't look so blurry.  And I do mean everything - fonts, icons, etc.

So I did a bunch of reading and decided to try xrandr.  Well, that seems like a fairly cool command, but it didn't really solve my problem.  However, it did confirm my suspicions that one of these programs is giving me the wrong information, since the only 1280x1024 resolution it gives me is at a 50* 51 refresh rate.  I tried changing the rate with:

xrandr -r 60

It wouldn't let me do it.  It says:

"Rate not available for this size"

I'm really kind of puzzled about this, I've tried three different ways of generating xorg.conf files (Xorg -configure, xorgconfig, nvidia-xconfig) and they all give me the right resolution, but the wrong refresh rate.  For some reason linux wants to run things at 50hz...

I'd post more information up here, but I'm not sure what you would want to see.  I'm pretty sure it's not the xorg.conf...

Hope you guys can help.

Re: SOLVED Blurry/Ghosting LCD with Nvidia-96xx

Well...  I'm still searching for an answer since I haven't managed to solve this yet.  Now I think that xrandr just wants to give wrong information:

nvidia-settings -q refreshrate

says my monitor is running at 60 Hz.  Anyone have any idea why I might be having this blurry double-vision thing going on?  It seems like everything is setup right, so far as I can see.

Re: SOLVED Blurry/Ghosting LCD with Nvidia-96xx

Hi syan
You can look in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file for messages from the nvidia driver.
Also check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, some parameters may not be rightly set for your monitor model.
Here is what I have :
Section "Monitor"
    DisplaySize  375   300  # mm
    Identifier   "Monitor0"
    VendorName   "EMPREX"
    ModelName    "1280x1024@75HZ"
    HorizSync    30-80
    VertRefresh  56-76

    Option       "DPMS"
EndSection
Section "Device"
...
    Option "UseEdidFreqs" "false"
EndSection
I force the nvidia driver to use my HorizSync and VertRefresh values which I got from the monitor documentation.

And I add that the 'nvidia-settings -q refreshrate' is the one that gives you the real current refresh rate,
xrandr gives wrong values and choices.

Thanks for the reply, berbae.

I've been trying different things with the xorg.conf file, but nothing I do seems to help.  I tried adding in some of the things you had in yours, like the EDID option and now my xorg.conf looks like this:

Apart from the warnings "No modes were requested ..." and "option "UseEDIDfreqs=false" is not used" nothing looks that bad to me.  Any ideas?  This is what I see in xfce:

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/5268 … ot2dk6.png

I also tried using the gtf output a few times and that didn't work either.  I'm starting to wonder if it's a hardware problem.  Seems kind of subtle for a malfunctioning graphics card though, doesn't it?

Thanks again

Re: SOLVED Blurry/Ghosting LCD with Nvidia-96xx

OK from the snapshot image you provided I see that your problem is not so serious as I thought.
The nvidia driver works correctly and so does your graphical card. You can confirm that by trying openGL screensaver themes or running glxgears.
Your problem rather is about the fonts used on your system.
There already exists threads on this subject, so my  advice is to concentrate on this subject : how to get a better
fonts rendering (font choice, antialiasing, ...).
After some tryings you will surely find the font configuration which you prefer.

Re: SOLVED Blurry/Ghosting LCD with Nvidia-96xx

You could be right - I actually thought the same thing at first, but then I noticed that the same effect seems to occur with icons as well.  Even the mouse cursor suffers from this.  Do you think fixing the fonts will take care of that?

Also...  I just checked out the screenshot with my other computer...  This screenshot does not show the problem.  It looks perfect compared to what I'm actually getting.  I'm not sure why the screenshot would be so much clearer than the monitor picture.  The monitor isn't broken, I'm using it right now in windows and everything looks fine.  Sorry for the useless screenshot.

In arch everything seems to have a blurry, faded copy of itself slightly to the right of the original.  Except when I take a screenshot, apparently.  That could be a good thing though, I hope...

Thanks

Re: SOLVED Blurry/Ghosting LCD with Nvidia-96xx

Well, this is embarrassing...  I was thinking about how the screenshot came out ok and the monitor's picture was messed up and figured that meant the graphics card was working perfectly and there must be something between it and the monitor that was causing the problem.  Like...  the cable...  I had already removed the cable from the computer before and tightened it, but I never checked the monitor end.  When I checked it, it was a little loose so I tightened it and things seem a lot clearer now.  It's still not perfect, there's some slight blur if I look really close, especially with the cursor, but at least I can use it now.

On the bright side I learned a lot about xorg.conf...

Thanks for all your help, berbae.  smile
