[SOLVED-ish] full system upgrade killed my audio

hello. i did pacman -Syu in the morning and it upgraded a few important packages (wireplumber, libwireplumber, and both linux/linux-zen kernels). turned off the laptop a couple hours after that because i went out. now i come home and i realise audio is dead. only output device listed in pavucontrol is a dummy output, not the "acp3xalc5682m98 Speakers" and "acp3xalc5682m98 Headphones" that existed before the update

this is a chromebook (acer chromebook spin 514) so i had to use this script to enable audio. (which created the "acp3xalc5682m98" output devices). had no problems with the audio till today, i reran the script when trying to troubleshoot but it did not work.

tried to manually enable wireplumber again by running "systemctl --user --now enable wireplumber" in terminal but it did nothing either. "wpctl status" doesn't even show the acp3xalc5682m98 devices.

what do?

Tried downgrading the wireplumber packages, it seems some detection bugs have slipped in. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=314776

Do you see the audio device on a ALSA level?

i'm not very well versed on linux audio so idk exactly what you mean! do you mean the headphone/speakers output device that was there before in pavucontrol? this is the aplay output, doesn't seem to show those output devices i mentioned...

probably a wireplumber bug, then. i didn't even know you could downgrade packages in arch, is this safe to do? or should i just wait 1 or 2 days for a bugfix? a couple days without audio wont hurt lol

Looks like kernel regression in that case, if they're not visible in aplay -l, or potentially the overrides in your script being obsolete if you're lucky, have you tried reverting the things it did and checking again? Can you check/reproduce on the LTS kernel? What do you get from

sudo journalctl -kb --grep=snd

hi, has to be kernel regression! audio works in linux-lts. now, how do i report this? should i go report the kernel regression somewhere or should i just report the issue on the script's github?

edit: sudo journalctl -kb --grep=snd's output just in case. shows the same thing when run in linux-lts and linux-zen

btw, something that might be related to this issue. i have ly as a display manager, and its animation runs slower when using the newest kernel. linux-lts (and the normal kernel before yesterdays update) runs the animation at its proper speed. something weird with the configs or may it be kernel-regression related?

hi, i also see the same thing - audio card not found with the latest kernel 7.2.2.arch1-1, but is working with the lts kernel.  My setup is an HP Chromebook, with Dirinboz board.  Sound was working fine until kernel upgrade a few days ago when the acp3xalc5682m98 card was no longer found.  Exactly the same as reported above.  Definitely a regression.

You'd probably want to report this either on LKML or kernel.bugzilla.org or so. FWIW for some better diagnostic on what's happening exactly can you provide a full journal of the boot showing the issue? e.g.

sudo journalctl -kb-1

for the boot prior to your current one and so forth if you don't want to explicitly reboot into the broken kernel. But since you need to use this script in the first place might be a good idea to report it there first.
